ROBERT JAMES FISCHER
(born Mar-09-1943, died Jan-17-2008) United States of America (citizen of Iceland)

[what is this?]
Robert James ("Bobby") Fischer was born on March 9, 1943 in Chicago. At 13, he won the stunning brilliancy D Byrne vs Fischer, 1956, which Hans Kmoch christened "The Game of the Century." At 14, he won the US Championship, becoming the youngest player ever to do so.

Fischer's victory qualified him for the 1958 Portorož Interzonal. He tied for 5th–6th, which sufficed to advance him to the Candidates Tournament to decide the challenger to World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik. It also made him, at 15, the youngest grandmaster ever - a record that stood until Judit Polgar broke it in 1991. At the Candidates tournament, held in Bled/Zagreb/Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Fischer finished fifth out of eight, the top non-Soviet player.

Fischer won the US Championship all eight times he played, in each case by at least a point. In the US Championship 1963/64 (1963) he achieved the only perfect score (11-0) in the history of the tournament.

In 1962, he won the Stockholm Interzonal 2½ points ahead of Efim Geller and Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian. This made him one of the favorites to win the Candidates Tournament at Curaçao, but he only finished fourth, behind Petrosian, Geller, and Paul Keres.

In a famous article in Sports Illustrated, The Russians Have Fixed World Chess, Fischer accused the Soviets of cheating: Petrosian, Geller, and Keres had drawn all 12 of the games among themselves at Curaçao. Because of this, he refused to play in the next Candidates cycle. He did play in the 1967 Sousse Interzonal, but left it while leading, because of a scheduling dispute occasioned by Fischer's refusal to play on Saturday, his Sabbath.

In 1970 he won the Palma de Mallorca Interzonal by a record 3½ points. The following year, he shocked the chess world by sweeping the Fischer-Taimanov Candidates Match (1971) and the Fischer-Larsen Candidates Match (1971) by identical 6-0 scores. He also won the first game of his Candidates final against former World Champion Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian, giving him a modern record of 20 consecutive wins at the highest level of competition. He beat Petrosian by 6½-2½ to advance to the World Championship match against reigning champion Boris Spassky. This also gave him a FIDE rating of 2785, making him at that time the highest-rated player in history.

In Reykjavik, he won the Fischer-Spassky World Championship Match (1972) by 12½-8½ to become the 11th World Chess Champion. In 1975, Fischer forfeited his title after FIDE refused to meet his conditions for a World Championship match with Anatoly Karpov. He then vanished from the public eye for nearly 20 years.

After ending his competitive career, he proposed a new variant of chess and a modified chess timing system. His idea of adding a time increment after each move is now standard, and his variant "Fischerandom" (or "Chess960") is gaining in popularity.(2)

Fischer resurfaced in 1992 to play a match against his old rival Spassky in Yugoslavia, which he won 10-5 with 15 draws. This action allegedly violated U.S. Treasury Department regulations that forbade transacting business with Yugoslavia. Fischer evaded authorities for twelve years until July 13, 2004, when he was arrested in Japan. On March 22, 2005, he was granted Icelandic citizenship and finally freed from Japan. He died of renal failure in Iceland on January 17, 2008 at the age of 64.

Fischer's anthology, My 60 Memorable Games, was published in 1969. It has been described as a "classic of objective and painstaking analysis"1 and is regarded as one of the great classics of chess literature.

Mar-27-05  Halldor: Fischer 'kidnapped' - are the headlines here in Reykjavik. When he came in a private jet to Reykjavik (provided by a millionaire who owns a part of the TVstation involved), Fischer was immediately taken away in a limousine from that same TVstation. At this point the position is rather unclear but this is at least not what had been planned. When the world media had left then the limousine sneaked into the airport again and the TVstation which had provided the jet made a private interview. After that the rest of the original ceremonial plan could at last take place, and Fischer met his friends and supporters.

So now there is a hard debate here in Reykjavik if the camera crew of that TVstation which was making a documentary of Fischer's rescue from Japan and his "historical victorious entrance to Iceland" had prearrange things and controlled the course of events. They call it healthy competion. Others ask what will happen to the free press if some millionaires can buy it. (The country is literally floating in money pouring into it from investments in Russia creating new millionaires and billionaires; reinvestments also in East and West Europe - banks, shopping chains, mobile phone network, medicine factories, etc. - everything that can be swallowed.)

In the middle of all this fuss Fischer himself seems to be the only relaxed person (!?), not at all taking part in these discussions but enjoying the early springtime. In fact the winter never came (Global Warming? - then we will all perish in that end game).

Ron: <Halldor> Before these events with Fischer, I have been thinking of taking of trip to Iceland. How is the weather there in the summer? What sorts of things should a tourist see in Iceland?

azaris: <What sorts of things should a tourist see in Iceland?> Well, there's this one tourist attraction that's full of hot air and spouts off once a day. He's called Bobby Fischer.
Mar-27-05  pubs r us: I used to know a guy who went to Iceland every summer. The pictures he showed me of the glaciers, etc. were amazing. Iceland also has some of the most beautiful women in the world. I'm pretty sure there are trips organized out of NYC to attend the Miss Iceland competition.
Mar-27-05  csmath: <<Well, there's this one tourist attraction that's full of hot air and spouts off once a day. He's called Bobby Fischer. >>

Bobby is now definitely Iceland's tourist attraction, I just doubt he will be welcoming any visitor. LOL.

TheSlid: <Stop babbling and get back to the chessboard.> Interesting - does anyone here think that Bobby could still play, that is 2700+ ? I would think asking Fischer to play chess would be like asking Maradona to play football.

(Note to US members - Maradona was one of the best soccer players, but now looks like a football on legs)

Hesam7: <Pizzathehut> Too bad that he has not all the games! Just one game, and we do not know the result!
Mar-27-05  WMD: In any Kasparov-Fischer match, Garry would have everything to lose and nothing to gain. Go get him, Bobby!
Mar-27-05  dafish298: the latest article on chessbase by that Dennis Monokroussos writes he has a secret game played between Fischer and Karpov in 1976 that he is going to reveal. This seems like more fabricated nonsense to me than reality..as why would he wait 18 years to release the game?
Mar-27-05  Jamespawn: Could a game between Fischer and Karpov been kept secret all this time? It seems incredible.
Mar-27-05  dafish298: yea it does..regardless i will watch his 'lecture' for the first time lol but the credibility of why someone like him has this game and no one else seems odd
Mar-27-05  WMD: At no point is it mentioned that these informal games involved chess. Could be I-spy, noughts and crosses, rock, paper, scissors.
Mar-27-05  Halldor: (Reykjavik) I was just returning home from a family dinner. There I heard that two of my relatives had seen Fischer in the Center today. Fischer and Watai were sitting in the sunshine on a bench in front of the Lake where there are many birds. There were as usually lot of people there, and I'm sure most of them have recognized Fischer, but nobody did disturb him. After a walk in the Center and a stay in a café these relatives of mine came back to the Lake on their way to the parking. Then they saw that Fischer and Watai were still sitting on the same bench as before undisturbed! Seemingly people are following his command from the plane: "Leave - me - alone!" We will wait for further orders from the master!

<Ron> see for FAQs: <http://www.visitreykjavik.is/qa.asp...; also something like: <http://www.icelandtouristboard.com/...;

Additionally: If you are looking for both fun and trouble go to the highland, but choose organised trips - renting a jeep and going there whithout a trained driver is too dangerous, many tourists have died in accidents there. There you can enter moonlike and martian landscapes where NASA astronauts have been training (-from the eruption that caused: global cooling that caused crop failure on the continent that lead to the riots of hungry people in Paris and this among other reasons became the French Revolution 1789, and of course this eruption killed most of the population here in Iceland). - For more extreme vacation for the fittest there are trips down waterfalls in small boats...

<pubs r us: ...trips organized out of NYC...> I've heard of regular weekend trips just for the nightlife of Reykjavik.

Mar-27-05  mikejaqua: The story of the FIscher Karpov meeting in '76 and the offhand games has been areound for a long time. Some credible sources believe it. It will be interesting to see what Monokroussos comes thtough with. Hopefully Karpov will be willing to vouch for the authenticity of the game(s).

keypusher: <sneaky>, I read back over my posts, and I apologize for their needlessly arrogant tone. I agree with you that questions of governmental authority over us -- including, in the US, constitutional questions -- are very important ones. But that particular item -- whether Congress' authority extends over the states and their citizens -- is just not an open question anymore. Whether it has the power to regulate certain of the specific things you mention is, of course, still unanswered, and very much worth thinking about as you say.

Hanzo Steel: <At no point is it mentioned that these informal games involved chess. Could be I-spy, noughts and crosses, rock, paper, scissors.>

What a letdown that would be, but I wouldn't be surprised if you are right. Otherwise, this would truly be amazing. Since I'm not able to get his lectures on my Mac, could someone please post the game here if they see it tomorrow?

Mar-27-05  Durcet: By the looks of the guy, I wouldn't believe Monokroussos even if he insisted two plus two equals four. :-)
Mar-28-05  Jamespawn: Durcet: I just hope he isn`t Jewish because this will likely lead to another of Fischer`s anti Semitic tirades that somehow this is some sort of Jewish conspiracy.
Mar-28-05  spirovskiyev: I have often fancied with myself about the Fischer-Karpov Match...

Were there any games occured between these two titanic masters...

I could only imagine...

BUT THE SCHOCKING AND STUNNING REVELATION IS THAT FISCHER AND KARPOV ACTUALLY PLAYED GAMES AFTER A NEGOTIATION IN 1976 FAILED. . .

THIS IS THE GREATEST AND MOST ASTONISHING NEWS THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD IN THE UNIVERSE OF CHESS. . .

COULD ANYBODY SHOW ME THE SCORES OF THOSE GAMES BETWEEN KARPOV AND FISCHER. . .? THE TITANIC BATTLE OF THE AGES. . .? THANKS

Mar-28-05  WMD: <There were as usually lot of people there, and I'm sure most of them have recognized Fischer, but nobody did disturb him.>

Something the people of Japan and Iceland have in common, a sense of decorum. Not loud and brash like your typical American.
