Lars Hanssen was born 30 August 1903 in Trondheim, and educated as a lawyer. He was Norwegian vice champion in 1926 (behind H C Christoffersen). In Oslo 1928 he was 3rd= behind Erik Ruben Lundin. He won the Nordic Championship B-group in Stockholm 1930 and played on board two (+2 =3 -11) in the Prague 1931 olympiad. In 1932 he was again Norwegian vice champion (behind Eugen Johnsen whom he soon after defeated 5-1 in a match), and in 1936 he was team winner with his club SK 1911.

He is known for an endgame study that won 1st prize (ahead of Leonid Kubbel and others) in Fodor Illustrations-Verlag 1930:
