Kholodkevich Khrisogon Iustinovich was born near Vladivostok. He studied at the Yekaterinoslav Mining Institute and actively participated in the chess life of the city. During the Civil War, Kholodkevich served with the "Whites." After the war he settled in Irkutsk, where he helped organize a city chess club. In 1923, Kholodkevich moved to Moscow, becoming a multiple prize-winner of the capital's championships.

In 1937 Kholodkevich was repressed, received 10 years in the camps, after which he managed to return to chess.
