offramp: Thanks for that. It is nice to be able to visualize the face of the man that owns The Hand That Shook The World.
Sep-30-08  whiteshark: You are welcome! I sometimes mix it with 28th April 2006 on the Euston Road.
Sep-30-08  jon01: Kärner is currently playing Tallinn Champioships 2008.

Here is a video of him from January 2008 Estonia-Finland 100 boards match. It's a quite hilarious game, if you look at 0:50-1:30.

Oct-01-08  whiteshark: From the youtube video (start at 0m:40s), Nevanlinna-Karner:

Was White Risto Nevanlinna ?

Apr-24-15  zanzibar: In the video he queens the pawn, but removes both pawn + bishop... oops!

Then his opponent stops the clock and offers his hand?! I suppose Karner had offered a draw or what?

(Is he really 73 in the video?)

I stopped by he to note that he's listed as <Karner, Hillary> in <RUSbase>'s version of <URS Cup (1970)>.

Oh, and here's another picture of the player (<whiteshark>'s chessbase link is now stale):

Kärner was known for his sharp and uncompromising playing style. He recorded wins against two world champions, Tal (1971 and 1983) and Karpov (1972). He was also the only Estonian player who beat Paul Keres (1976) in a tournament game. At the Estonian Chess Championships he won 11 medals (seven gold, three silver and one bronze).

Kärner is the author of book - «Kuus aastakümmet Caissa lummuses» («Six decades under the spell of Caissa»), Published by Argo, Tallinn, 2012 (the book contains 200 of his games including his wins against Tal, Karpov and Keres):

offramp: This is a real shame, but I am glad he lived into his 80s. I first saw H Karner vs Karpov, 1972 when I was very young and it was a revelation to me. It showed that a good player can create problems for his opponent even with very limited material, and that one should never give up a game too early.

His many Estonian championships show how strong he was, and it's a shame he never managed the last step of becoming a grandmaster. Some players, like Emory Tate and Karner, seem to operate outside of a standard ranking system.
