Josef Matschego (aka Matscheko) studied law and joined the civil service, where he got ahead in the foreign ministry.

He was a frequent visitor of the chess cafés of Vienna and a member of the Wiener Schachgesellschaft.

Sep-11-13  thomastonk: According to "BCM" vol 73, 1953, p 329: "Josef Matschego (1800-1858)".

Ehn and Strouhal call him "Hofsekretär Josef Matschego" in their book "Luftmenschen", p 26.

The "Schachzeitung" vol 19, 1864, p 249: "Schachmeister v. Matschego".

Sep-12-13  thomastonk: The "Schachzeitung", vol 13, 1858, p 286-288 does not only give the win against Hamppe, but also another Allgaier-Gambit won by him against Ernest Falkbeer in 1853.
