VLADIMIR MALAKHOV
(born Nov-27-1980, 37 years old) Russia
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]
Grandmaster Vladimir Malakhov first made a name for himself by winning the World Under-14 Championship in 1993. Since then he has steadily improved his Elo rating, reaching the coveted 2700 mark once in April of 2004 and again since April of 2009. He is also a part-time nuclear physicist.

He has had many successes in the European and World Championships. He placed second in both the EU-ch 4th (2003) and 10th European Individual Championship (2009). In the FIDE World Championships of 2000 and 2004, he reached the second round. He was more successful in the next FIDE cycle: his eleventh place at the FIDE World Cup (2005) earned him a berth in the 2006 Candidates when top rating seeds Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik declined to enter. He was eliminated from the cycle after he lost his first Candidates' match to Alexander Grischuk. In the World Cup (2009) Malakhov reached the semi-finals after eliminating Pavel Eljanov, Wesley So, and Peter Svidler before being defeated by Ruslan Ponomariov in the rapid tiebreaks. The latter result qualified him for participation in the World Cup (2011); there he lost in the first round to Argentine GM Ruben Felgaer after drawing the classical games and losing the 25 minute rapid game tiebreaker 1.5-0.5. He placed equal 1st in the GM Vladimir Petrov memorial A rapid tournament held in Latvia in February 2013. He came =2nd (3rd on tiebreak) at the 13th European Individual Championship (2012), scoring 8/11 and qualifying for the World Cup (2013). He defeated Canadian champion player, GM Eric Hansen, in the first round and French GM Laurent Fressinet in the second round but was eliminated when he lost to Italian-American GM Fabiano Caruana in the third round. In October 2013, he played boards 3 to 5 (based at 5) for his team Malachite, helping it to win silver in the European Club Cup (2013).

Dec-20-09  redwhitechess: that website give a live games where any chess board are being shown at once. what a great idea! even though it become too small then for each board.

go malakhov and ivanchuck!

Dec-20-09  mysql: <khulakeg:Using my chess programs, malakhov has been playing with greater superiority than the <loud-mouthed> ponomariov>

What do you mean loud-mouthed?

Dec-20-09  returnoftheking: Malakhov won the European rapid championship ahead of Ivanchuk, Gashimov, Movsesian, Shirov and many others. Looks like his work for the world cup pays off!
Apr-11-10  The Rocket: lol this guys stats are better than kramnik and anand, Does he only play "weaker" tournaments or whats up?

Open Defence: perhaps, being a full time scientist might not leave him with time to do more..

blueofnoon: Russian players seldom get invitations from super tournaments. Therefore, they have to play in open tournaments, team tournaments and "2nd tier" closed tournaments to make a living. (ok, I know Malakhov is not professional)

This raises their stats of course, but whether they are happy with it I am not sure.

Apr-11-10  SamAtoms1980: Malakhov went 3-1, drawing four, in the Russian Team Championships (2010), including 3 points in the last 4 rounds. Way to go Malakhov!

Jul-24-10  sleepkid: Somehow I don't think his current FIDE rating is 2107. Chessgames might want to fix that.
Aug-15-10  Cercatore: Current FIDE rating: 2107

Error, or he lost 600 elo points?

polarmis: Apart from the slight error in the current FIDE rating :) it's also not true to say that Malakhov's main line of work is as a physicist. He's a professional chess player, though perhaps a slightly eccentric one! I just translated this very interesting recent interview:

  hedgeh0g: <Part-time> nuclear physicist?
Jun-30-11  nisarg1: No, he's a part-time chess player according to non-chess sources: he's got a Ph.D. and is said to play chess for hobby.
Jun-30-11  Troller: Unless he has begun working as a phycisist again he should be considered a professional chess player, at least according to his own words at the last World Cup.
