Feb-02-12  ragdecsap: nelson mariano beat the legendary joshua waitzin in 1994, a year after waitzin made the blockbuster movie: "Searching for Bobby Fischer".

Cheers and Chess.

Feb-02-12  Petrosianic: I don't know if having Hollywood do a fictionalized retelling of your life story is really enough to make a player legendary. I mean it's not like finding a significant improvement in The Rat, or anything.
Jun-28-12  Six66timesGenius: Happy Birthday Sir
Jul-22-12  wordfunph: as reported by Bobby Ang in Chess Asia Vol. 12 No.4

<1997 World Youth Festival: Two years ago, when IM Nelson Mariano was making a run for the world junior championship, one of his main rivals was IM Dharsham Kumaran from England. I knew the Englishman's coach very well, IM Malcolm Pein, and could not help kidding him that the Filipino was a lot stronger than his ward. Malcolm's reply surprised me - he agreed that Nelson was among the most talented in the group, but too bad that he cannot hope to win the championship. "Why?" I asked, to which he gave the simple reply "Because he does not have chessbase.">

Jan-14-13  pinoymaster77: Congrats to Elo d 3rd for winning GOKAK 2012 blitz event, besting some GMs. 2nd GM Oli & 3rd gmjoey.
