Aug-10-18  Delboy: One of the most colourful characters I have met in the eccentric chessplayer fraternity.

Trying to make a living from chess, he played in many South African tournaments in the 1980's (when that country was internationally boycotted) under the pseudonym "I Dawson". This was however discovered by the Zimbabwe chess federation, whereupon he continued playing in South Africa under a second pseudonym, "IDA Snow" (an anagram of "I Dawson").

No longer able to represent Zimbabwe after the 1984 Olympiad, he became board 1 for Guernsey from 1986-1990

Here is a page that includes some pictures of him: http://www.guernseychessclub.org.gg...

There are several reports stating that he has passed away prematurely, but I have no more details

Do you mean he was expelled from the chess federation, or did he emigrate?

woldsmandriffield: Lovely guy. I lost to him in the Islington Open 1990 the one time we played. Sorry if he’s passed away and we won’t have a rematch.

John Saunders: From the Bootham School Register (FindMyPast): "LE BLANCQ, SIMON CHARLES : B[ootham School, York]. 1966-73 : b. York, 1955 : MA Economics, Churchill College, Univ. of Cambridge : Represented the Channel Islands (Board 1) at three Chess Olympiads and has also coached the Botswana Chess Team. In 1990 he was the Scottish Open Champion. : d. 1991." He was born in the 3rd quarter of 1955 in York. He played in the Lloyds Bank Masters, 17-26 August 1991, so he must have died later in that year if the school record is correct.

John Saunders: BCM, February 1992, page 92: "We regret to learn of the death of Simon Le Blancq on safari in Kenya in early December. Tony Fulton sends us his Jersey Evening Post column for 13 December, from which we learn that Simon was only 36. He had been the mainstay of Channel Islands chess, playing on top board for the Olympiad team in 1986,1988 and 1990. Very well-known on the British weekend circuit, Simon played for top board for Zimbabwe in 1984 —he had been teaching in Africa for some years, and we recall him telling us of the wrath he incurred for playing in a South Africa tournament at that time."
Sep-11-21  Gallicrow: I vaguely remember someone at the time telling me that Simon had taken his own life due to reasons that I won't post here.
