Yury (Yuri) Shulman was born in Minsk, Belarus (USSR) in 1975. In his youth, he studied under the guidance of Tamara O Golovey, Albert Z Kapengut, and Boris Gelfand. He achieved the grandmaster title in 1995. He is married to WIM Viktorija Ni, with whom he has a son, Gabriel.

After moving to the USA in 1999, Shulman has consistently remained among the top American players. He tied for first in the 2001 World Open. In 2006, he won the US Open Chess Championship. In 2008, he earned the highest honor in American chess, by winning the US Championship (2008). He represented the USA 2010 Olympiad team on 4th board. Apr-27-11  UrVileWedge: Sorry to hear about the result. I've been a Shulman fan for some time.

About 6-7 years ago, he used to do a weekly lecture for a scholastic club called the "Great Knights" on weekends, and I had the privilege of attending most of them. Sharp, sharp stuff, and it helped my game immensely.

One of the sessions, we were running a bit ahead of schedule, and he got out a clock and gave 5-1 time odds to anyone who was finished with the exercises. I took him up on one game, and somehow, I managed to get ahead on an exchange. I start trading off pieces, thinking to myself "Sure, he's a GM, but he's got a dead lost position. You can only lose this if you screw it up." So I double-checked all my moves, started exchanging pieces, and shoving my e pawn down to his end of the board.

I was so careful and exacting that 2 moves before I forced him to have to give up a piece to stop the queen, my flag fell, to the great amusement of everyone involved.

eternaloptimist: I hope that GM Shulman has a happy birthday today. I'm sure it would be a much happier 1 if he would have won another u. s. chess championship this year. He has won it once though (in 2008). Although he has been the runner-up 2 years in a row so that's a very good accomplishment in itself!

  chesstoplay:

Yury came home from the US Championship on his birthday.

So on his birthday, he was able to hold his son Gabriel (born on Easter Sunday) for the first time.

What a great present for one of the true ambassadors of the game!

:)

LIFE Master AJ: I sent Shulman an e-mail ... congratulating him on two straight years of excellent results. (Only Kamsky was able to stop Shulman, and - everyone knows - Gata is a chess MONSTER!!!)

Congrats Yury. (Thank you for the very nice e-mail.)

LIFE Master AJ: Of course - Yuri (Yury) won it all in 2008.
Nov-06-11  ZeejDonnelly: Got to play against Yury in a simul yesterday -- my first over-the-board setting ever. He first presented some cool problems and he was an incredibly genial guy. Played about 25 people, offering players under 1800 the choice of color. I have no rating aside from online blitz so I decided to take black. Unfortunately, I had to leave before our game could finish, with Black to play with a really cramped position (I was pretty nervous and I lacked a plan): [Shulman-Fabianczyk UChicago Simul] 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 0-0 5. Nf3 d5 6. Be2 Nbd2 7. 0-0 e5 8. Be3 Ne8 9. Qc2 h5 10. Rad1 exd4 11. Nxd4 c5 12. Nb5 Qb6 13. Nd5 Qd8 14. Qc1 Nd2f6 15. Bg5 a6 16. Nbc3 Be6 17. Qf4 Bxd5 18. cxd5 b5 19.Rfe1 --- at this point, I had to leave, and I was torn as to what I ought to play. I may run this through the computer tubes soon. Anyway, thanks and best wishes to Yury.
