CRISMELDRE: Barcenilla is RP’s 11th grandmaster
06/04/2009 05:42 PM

MANILA, Philippines – International master Rogelio Barcenilla Jr. became the country’s 11th grandmaster after bagging his third and final GM norm.

Barcenilla's victory over Georgian GM Zviad Izoria in the Copper State International Chess Championship last May 29 to June 3 in Mesa, Arizona, gave the Filipino his much-coveted GM title.

According to the United States Chess Federation, the former San Sebastian College mainstay defeated Izoria after 31 moves of a King's Indian Defense.

Barcenilla, currently based on Mandaluyong but originally from Iligan City, finished just a point behind eventual winner Uzbek GM Timur Gareev, who accumulated 8.0 points in the 10-round event.

With his GM norm completed, Barcenilla joins an elite group composed of Eugene Torre, Joey Antonio, Bong Villamayor, Nelson Mariano II, Mark Paragua, Wesley So, Darwin Laylo, Jayson Gonzales, John Paul Gomez, Joseph Sanchez and the late Rosendo Balinas Jr.

Torre was actually Asia's first grandmaster. – GMANews.TV

Jun-05-09  TugasKamagong: Congratulations, Grandmaster Banjo Barcenilla! Nalipay ko ug maayo, bai, nga naabtan na gyud nimo ang dugay na natong gipangandoy, nga ma black belter na ka sa chess. Full-fledged grandmaster na ka karon, bai!

I understand you're a black belter in taekwando. Well, in your last-round game with GM Izoria, 20.Nxh5+ and 21.f6+ looked like taekwando moves to me!

  Winter: Congratulations Banjo!

Just like the saying goes: 'It ain't over 'til its over...'

A vindication... a great talent should never be wasted by mere politics...

Jun-05-09  timhortons: <zanshin> i had no idea, baka nag bago ng blog ang admin o for what ever reason he shut it down.

walang pera sa blogging saka, it takes to much time kasi naging compulsion ng blogger maging uptodate sa lahat at mag sulat, sa dami ng dapat gawin sa buhay naging kumpetisya ito sa importanting bagay.

dunkenchess: I am happy for my friend GM Rogelio Barcenilla Jr for becoming RP's 11th Grandmaster in Chess. You made us proud.

You just stay put in the state of Arizona, you new found home.

Jun-05-09  timhortons: <zanshin> i meet shulman in person and i know hes a very nice guy.Parang si borislav ivkov din ang manners, mga kunting bagay na ma obserbahan mo sa galaw nila at masasabi mo na magalang sila na tao.
Jun-05-09  einuj: It has been long overdue - Congrats GM Banjo.
I remember that my friends even had to sneak me in in their colleges when Banjo plays so just I can watch his games !

I hope IM Sevillano is next...

I remember there's another very good NCAA player i used to watch. He usually gets into time trouble but still manage to win most of his games. If im not mistaken his name is Sam Patena, does anybody here know where is this guy now ?

Jun-05-09  Jim Bartle: Is there another player called Banjo? If so, when they played it would be...

  pinoymaster77: Good am,

Congratulations to GM Banjo Barcenilla!!

I hope you have dual citizenship and could also play for Phils, if USCF allows!!

pinoymaster77: Correct me if memory serves me wrong.

As I recalled during a World Chess Olympiad hosted in the Phils, at the PICC I recall our Team A included GM Eugene and IM Sevillano, I am not sure of rest of team members if IM Mascarinas and Banjo were there.

IM Rodriguez definitely spearheaded our Team B (or was it Team C?) that scored some upsets. IM Rodriguez waylaid some GMs then.

Banjo then was touted as the #2 player
(after Eugene) and had a bright future,Im not sure what exactly happended and won't be surprised if it was affected by chess politics then.

Thats also correct, IM Sevillano is actually GM caliber and giving the top US GMs a tough time. Im just not sure why he's not a GM yet. He won a major US tournament (US Open?) and was headlined in a US chess magazine.

pinoymaster77: Since GM Banjo is also Mandaluyong based and probably transits between Arizona and here, I hope he's in the country in Sept and be able to compete in the GMA and Pichay Cups!

I hope he's also in touch with FM Adrian Pacis who's also Mandaluyong-based.

Jun-06-09  Allan D: Congratulation to Grandmaster Rogelio Barcenilla! You now belong in Mt.Olympus! Caissa finally smiled at you! If my memory is correct, The Grandmaster title should be awarded to you during Yerevan Olympiad? The opening specialty of GM Barcenilla is English Opening,He has a very good result in this opening.
