ISADOR TUROVER
(born Jul-08-1892, died Oct-16-1978, 86 years old) Poland (federation/nationality United States of America)

[what is this?]
Isador Samuel Turover was born July 8, 1892, in Warsaw, Poland, and lived in Belgium before emigrating to the United States. He won the championship of Baltimore in 1918-1921 and that of Washington D.C. in 1921. Turover participated in several major U.S. tournaments of the 1920s and 1930s, his best finish being =3rd at Bradley Beach, 1929.

However, Turover was best known as a generous patron of the game. He ran a successful lumber business in the Washington area, which allowed him to travel the world visiting tournaments and offering brilliancy prizes. This activity ranged from San Remo 1930 to endowing the World Brilliancy Prize in 1974. He also sponsored the participation of Robert James Fischer at the Stockholm Interzonal (1962) tournament.

GrahamClayton: Turover was also the "second" for Bobby Fischer at the 1962 Stockholm Interzonal. When Fischer slept in and did not arrive in time for the pre-tournament drawing of lots, Turover substituted for him.
