Herman 'Hera' Lazarevich Hodos/Khodos

'.. born in Rostov-on-Don.

In 1958 he graduated with a gold medal from secondary school No. 39 in Rostov.

In 1965 he graduated with honors from the Rostov Pedagogical Institute (Faculty of Philology).

Champion of the USSR in the youth team of the RSFSR (1956, 1957. In 1957 he played on the 1st board).

Repeated World Champion as part of the USSR student national team (1961-1965).

Participant of the final of the 30th USSR Championship (1962) and several semifinals.

..

Over the years, the Rostovite's colleagues on the student team were such outstanding chess players as Boris Spassky , Leonid Stein , Vladimir Savon , Vladimir Bagirov , Eduard Gufeld , Albert Kapengut

..

The slight "sadness" in Hodos's face* [with glasses], noted by Moscow journalists, is probably also explained by the fact that the glorious student chess five-year plan (1961-1965), which coincided with the time of his studies at the Pedagogical Institute ended for Herman. Participant of five student chess Olympiads (which in itself is a great achievement) he showed the best result on his board in four of them and in the very first - (Helsinki, 1961) - the absolutely best result of the entire Olympiad - he forever inscribed his name in the history of Soviet chess. ..'
