Leon Stolzenberg immigrated to the United States after World War I and settled in Detroit, Michigan. He won the US Open in 1926 and 1928, also winning the championship of Michigan a record 13 times. Stolzenberg won the US Open Postal Chess Championship (Golden Knights) three times (1947-48, 1950, 1960-61). He won the championship of the Correspondence Chess League of America twice. At the time of Stolzenberg's death, he had a perfect final score in the 1970 Golden Knights Postal Chess Championship (won by Juris Jurevics).

Stolzenberg was also the Michigan Chess Association State chmapion in 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1942, 1944, 1945, 1947, 1950, 1951, 1953 and 1962.
