Sep-02-06  rjsolcruz: Well, because of the FEBTC Open in Manila, this "R Salvador" has got to be the Roland Salvador who is making waves by nailing 2 IM and 2 GM norms as an NM. Oct-30-06  rainbowxpress: FM Salvador finished the tournament tied for 1st to 2nd place with 7 points. With the result, did he finally obtain his 3rd GM norm?
Oct-30-06  balweg214: Actually, FM Roland Salvador (2455) won on tie break the 28th Festival Scacchistico Internazionale Open in Arco, Italy He defeated IM Aleksandar Wohl (2425) of AUS in the last round. He garnered 7.0 points in the 9-round swiss event, the same output as IM Jacob Aagaard of SCO (2nd place) and Michael Schaefer of GER (3rd place). I don't think he gets a GM norm because he only faced 2 GMs (Drasko & Teske). FM Virgilio Vuelban at 6.0 points is tied at 7th-20th places (16th place).

Nov-01-06  rainbowxpress: If he didn't get his GM norm in Arco Festival, was it then an IM norm instead so that he finally earned his IM title?

Oct-24-07  micrab: He is currently on solo first, scoring 5/5.
Oct-25-07  jofre: in round 6, he will play against the 2nd GM.there are only 3 GMs here, he won against GM lazic (1st) on round 5.hopefully he will win in round 6 (the 2nd GM). if the other GM(the 3rd one) will win too, the said 3rd GM will be paired againt him.by then, for this tournament, he played the 3 GMs and more than 2/3 scores (6/9, hopefully a higher than 6 points, since his opponents has very low elo averages) for the required on gaining GM norms.2500 elo rating will then be his problem for the GM title.GOD BLESS PHILIPPINE CHESS!!!!
Oct-25-07  jofre: IM Salvador round 7 opponent is GM,his 3rd GM opponent in this tournament.his current score is 5.5/6.To gain a GM norm, 1 has to play against,at least from 3 different federations, 3 GM opponents and 2/3 or of the score.but i think his opponenet elo averages is not that high, so the very safe is at least 7/9 score. meaning 1.5/3 for the next 3 rounds is very attainable by in-form and solid IM SALVADOR.
Oct-25-07  micrab: IM Salvador, who incidentally is the defending champion in this tourney has a very realistic chance of nailing his 3rd(?) and final norm. May he succeed in his quest.
Oct-25-07  NOKRO: IM Roland Salvador is one of the promising and consistent chessplayers that we could look up to, to score big in the world chess scene. Go for that 3rd and final GM norm! Another GM in the making!

Pinoy chessers finish 1-2 in Italy tournament
05/19/2009 03:47 PM
GMA news.tv -

MANILA, Philippines - Rolando Salvador and Virgilio Vuelban posted a 1-2 finish for the Philippines in the recent Circolo Bertellini Salsomaggiore International Open Chess in Italy.

Salvador and Vuelban actually finished tied for the first to third spots with Serbian GM Miroljub Lazic after finishing with five points but Salvador bagged the title because of a better tie-break point.

The three finished tied for the top spot following their victories in the last round with Salvador downing IM Milan Mrdja of Croatia, Vuelban defeating FM Marco Corvi of Italy and Lazic subduing IM Paolo Vezzosi also of Italy.

Over at the the US Chess championship in Missouri, IM Enrico Sevillano of the Philippines finished tied for the 16th to 19th spots with GM Julio Becerra and IMs Michael Brooks and Tyler Hughes with their identical 4.0 points.

Sevillano was on his way to posting a better finish but defeat in the last two rounds to IM Ray Robson and GM Larry Christiansen sent him down the standings.

But Sevillano, now based in Tehachapi, California, pocketed $2,375 (over P100,000).Champion GM Hikaru Nakamura took home the top prize worth $40,000 with his 7.0 points.

May-19-09  pinoymaster77: Sana they could compete in the major tourneys in the Phils. I think next would be the GMA and Pichay Cups
Aug-08-10  asianwarrior: They fared well in other coubrries. Does this mean the Philippines would fare well in the international scene.
