He now lives in Spain. Shared the first place with Mikhail Tal and Jesus Nogueiras at Magistral Najdorf (1991) [brasilbase-1]. Champion of South America, winning at Brasilia Zonal 1993. He won Pamplona (1995). Shared the first place with Jan Timman at Donner Memorial (1995) ahead of Judit Polgar, Alexey Shirov, Alexander Khalifman, Alexander Morozevich, Valery Salov and Jeroen Piket. Shared the first place with Vassily Ivanchuk at Donner Memorial (1996), ahead of Gata Kamsky, Salov, Piket, Timman, Morozevich et alli http://www.chess.gr/tourn/3rd_Donne.... He won at Leon 1997, 1.0 pt ahead of John Nunn [brasilbase-2]. American Continental Champion at Cali 2007, with the same score as Alexander Ivanov, Varuzhan Akobian, Darcy Lima and Eduardo Patricio Iturrizaga Bonelli. Ibero-American Champion at Morelia 2008 [brasilbase-3]. He is a five-time chess champion of Peru, winning in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2002. Winner of the 2013 American Continental Championship in Bolivia.

Despite his win in the 2013 American Continental, Granda Zuniga had already qualified for the World Cup (2013) because of his leader board result in the 2012 American Continental Championship. At the World Cup 2013, he defeated Armenian GM Hrant Melkumyan in the first round, Hungarian legend GM Peter Leko in the second round and Dutch and World Junior #1 GM Anish Giri in the third round. He was eliminated in the Round of 16 (fourth round) by American-Italian GM Fabiano Caruana. Despite a lapse of form in the preceding months, Granda Zuniga rallied to win the fiercely fought 9th American Continental Championship in October 2014 with 8.5/11 on tiebreak, ahead of five other players. His win in this event qualified him for the World Cup 2015, which will be his fifth World Cup.

amadeus: One should add to his biography that he became world champion under-14 in 1980. Plus the Continental Championship (2007) and the Iberoamerican (2008).
Nov-24-08  ruelas007: And that he has played as board 1 in many, many olymps. Well not so many but he's completely dominant among Peru players

You are right. (I am a native Spanish speaker and I am known to be a grammar Nazi even on instant messaging chats. (Since most native Spanish speakers are ignorant <expletive that starts with f> when it comes to spelling rules, the grammar Nazi remark had to be made.))

Mar-01-10  Eduardo Leon: Besides, there should be no hyphenation between Granda and Zúñiga. Full names in Spanish have <two> last names.
