Jun-18-04  cousinIT: This guy sometimes plays blitz on the ICC, and let me tell you he's very good at it! His playing style is a bit like a young capa/karpov.

As for his classical chess, he's got stuck around 2600 (he should be 2700 going by his blitz play). His opening repertoire is a little limited and he perhaps doesn't play as often as he should. I guess he's one of these lazy underachieving players, so far......

Jun-20-04  PinkPanther: You can't gauge where a person should be in classical chess by their strength in blitz. With that said, we'll get to see how good this guy is in the coming days when he faces off against Adams.
May-22-05  lopium: Who wons between him and Adams?
Jul-01-05  ARMENIA: Karen Asrian! A great person and a great player... You know when to laugh and when to be serious... You know when to step up and when to make a difference... Your performance at Warshaw left many of the doubters in you shock... Future is straight ahead with many more championships to win and many more trophies to take home to Armenia!

Thank you for everything you have done!

God Bless you and God Bless Armenia

technical draw: A lot of politically correct people here. So tell me, am I the only one that thought He was a She?
Apr-13-06  ChessMan94: Count me in as one who thought Karen was a female. I just came to this page to find out about this female chess player that has not received as much publicity as Judit :) Now I know Karen is male.

Jan-28-07  ARMENIA: Winning the Armenian Championship is a great start for the year of 2007! He needs to use this success in progressing further ahead this year in international tournaments!

A great talent that has some what been disregarded by many! One of the true Armenian heroes!

God Bless Armenia

Apr-07-07  argishti: I think its quite a shame that this guy didnt get to the 2700 section. And he is drawing many games with 2400 crew. I mean come on, work more on your opening theories, and most 2600 people can become a super GM someday. But still, not a bad player at all. Just needs to work harder.
Oct-08-07  pawnofdoom: What's this guy's handle on ICC?

*** It is with great sadness and difficulty we report to you that today, June 9, Armenian Grandmaster Karen Asrian passed away. He was 28 years old. Details will be forthcoming. Round 1 games started late after a moment of silence in GM Asrian's memory. *** RIP GM Karen Asrian
Jun-09-08  SickedChess: Karen Asrian (born 24 April 1980 – died 9 June 2008) was an Armenian chess Grandmaster.

As of the October 2006 FIDE rating list, his Elo rating was 2634, tied for the fourth highest rank in Armenia.

He won the national Armenian Championship in 1999, 2007, and 2008, and the tournaments of Dubai 2001 and Stepanakert 2004.

In 2006, Asrian won the Chess Olympiad in Turin as a member of Armenian team. He was playing on board three. Asrian had a solid playing style, refusing to take much risk on board. Combined with good endgame technique this made him an excellent team player.

Jun-09-08  ArmeniaNL: It is a big sorrow for all of us that this talented chess player passed away unexpectedly. My condolences to all his family members and all his fans.

Jun-09-08  jon01: It is very sad to hear that. We will never forget GM Karen Asrian.

SetNoEscapeOn: <Petrosianic> The chessbase report was very vague, let's wait until we know more details.

This young man took part in a great moment in chess history when his country triumphed over the whole world at the Olympiad in 2006. He and his teammates became national heroes.

Sadly, all we can do now is enjoy his games and the anecdotes of those who knew him personally.

RIP, Grandmaster.

Jun-09-08  wolfmaster: This is a huge loss to Armenia, chess, and the world. Karen was an excellent player, with wins over players like Kasimdzhanov, Ni Hua, Lajos Portisch, and Viktor Bologan. Asrian will always be remebered as a great young Armenian chess hope. RIP GM Asrian, we all love you.
Jun-09-08  khursh: RIP Karen Asrian,
He drove to the chess house in Yerevan, and than had a stroke, it was already late when medics came. Also he had headaches for the last 3-4 days.

Armenian players went to quick draws.

This was a shcoking loss, all Armenian chess community is shocked, Asrian was a defense force of our team. He was not even married. RIP my friend.

Jun-09-08  square dance: very sad news.
