PENTALA HARIKRISHNA
(born May-10-1986) India

[what is this?]
Pentala Harikrishna was World Under-10 Champion in 1996 and he became a grandmaster in 2001. At 15, he was the youngest Indian GM in history. In 2004, he became the World Junior Champion, the first Indian to do so since Viswanathan Anand in 1987. This was also the 4th of 5 times that a player has won the World U-20 Championship at home for their country - the previous year, GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov did so after reclaiming his title the following year, & the year afterwards (in 2006), GM Zaven Andriasian was the latest to do so for Armenia. Harikrishna has represented India at every Olympiad since 2000 on either board 2 or board 3.

He began 2005 by tying for first in the Bermuda International (2005) (a Category 17 event). Later, he followed that up by winning a series of strong Cat 15 and 16 events - 2nd Sanjin Hotel Cup (2005), Crown Group of 9th Essent Hoogeveen (2005), XXII Reykjavik Open (2006), 4th Marx Gyorgy Memorial (2006). In August 2006, "Hari" beat Naiditsch in Mainz to become Chess960 World Junior Champion. He recaptured the 5th Gyorgy Marx Memorial (2007) title in 2007. He qualified for the World Cup (2011) through the 2011 Asian Continental championship and defeated Maxim Rodshtein in the first round, falling to Russian super-GM Dmitry Jakovenko in the second. In January 2012, Harikrishna won the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2011 - GMB with 9/13 (+6 -1 =6) and followed up in March by winning (on tiebreak) the huge 28th International Open at Cappelle-la-Grande with 7/9 and a 2783 TPR. In July 2012, placed =2nd (3rd on tiebreak) at the Benasque International Open in Spain and scored 7.5/11 at the Biel International Festival (Masters), a half point behind the leaders. He also represented India on board 2 at the Chess Olympiad (2012) in Istanbul.

A solid 6.5/13 at the Tata Steel (2013) super tournament at Wijk aan Zee pushed him over 2700 for the first time. Unfortunately, a very poor 3/10 (+0 -4 =6) at the 2013 Capablanca Memorial held in May 2013 slashed 22 points from his rating.

As of 1 June 2013, Harikrishna's standard rating is 2680, and he remains India's number 2 player behind Viswanathan Anand. number 9 in Asia and number 63 in the world. His blitz rating is 2631.

WTHarvey: <ChessVip> It's freeware. FullChessFen.exe The diagram only takes 7k memory storage tops.

Btw, Harikrishna picked up 28 rating points, moving from 59th place to 31st place from July to Oct. Not a bad move at all.

arifattar: <WTHarvey> Shouldn't that be 28 rating ranks/positions? Or is it an amazing coincidence?

  WTHarvey: <arifattar> Pretty amazing - 28 points & 28 places:

arifattar: <28 points & 28 places> Now what are the chances of something like that happening? I am sure the next 28 points would be much more hard work.
Oct-29-05  samsal27: Hari draws with Stefanova and clinches top spot. Congratulations to him, good luck for the World Cup!
Oct-29-05  tsj2000: Great victory in Essent Tournament Hari! Marvellous chess skills on display!! Keep it up!!!

Ragh: He should keep up this winning tempo for the World Cup in December. Also, it was really impressive of the upsurge in his chess ratings recently.

He is on the right track to achieve target 2700. He has got the gut to fight competition from other Generation-next players like Radjabov, Volokitin, Nakamura and others.

Oct-30-05  chesswonders: any idea what was Hari's performance rating in Essent?
Oct-30-05
Premium Chessgames Member
arifattar: The Times of India says he has gained 5 points after Essent which should put him in 26th place.

Open Defence: The problem is that once some of these players start playing at the highest level their performances start slipping and some never recover..I hope that won't be the case here

arifattar: well there is a small pic of Hari and a six line article on his win in the Sunday Times of India, which has a full page of articles on the India-Sri Lanka cricket series and they haven't even played for the last 2 days. No wonder they start slipping.

Open Defence: Well yes .. other sports are neglected ... the lack of quality chess clubs in Bangalore was also a factor in my decision to stop playing competitive chess

VishyFan: <chesswonders> Hari's rating performance for the Essent Crown Cup is 2739, He's going to gain 5.2 ELO from this tourney

whereas Sokolov will lose 2 ELO and Sutovsky will lose 7.6 ELO, Stefanova will gain 4.4 ELO........

VishyFan: FIDE has commited a serious blunder when they invited Nederlands where as they were supposed to invite India as India was place better than Nederlands in the Olympiad for the World Team Cup.....

Another worst thing is they have Chinese Women as a team, which is really awful, how do they thing the tournament will have any essence if they do such things as get weaker teams to play, originally Ukraine was also supposed to be playing and was supposed to be for 10 teams......

now, the tournament has started and going on with 9 weaker teams rather than with 10 strong teams.....

check out Van Wely's comments on the same issue.....

iron maiden: The Ukraine team seems to have cancelled their participation at the last minute. With Ivanchuk, Ponomariov and Volokitin in the lineup they were figured to be favorites. Does anyone have any news on why they withdrew?

VishyFan: <iron maiden>I donno for sure whether Ukrain withdrew from the tourney or not......., I just realized that they might have got a bye in the 1st round as this is a 9 team affair now........., seems like that.......

iron maiden: Yes, that seems to be the case, because the official site still lists them as participants.
Nov-02-05  chesswonders: Excerpt from GM Van Wely's letter to chessbase. He is speaking about the World team championship and FIDE's response to Netherlands team here!<..Fide answered that 1) we should not have been invited in the first place, according to regulations it should have been India; 2) India is not going to be invited because they need a visa to enter Israel and the time was too short to arrange that; 3) the reserved rooms had already been assigned to others (as if such a small problem could not be dealt with)> The third point is extremely funny! The first point exposes the chaotic functioning of FIDE, atleast for this event!

Dionyseus: I wonder which book Harikrishna was reading before his final round game against Stefanova: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

VishyFan: <Dionyseus> I guess it's the tournament brochure or the tourism guide... :)

Good win for Hari in this tournament, he gains 5.2 ELO, he might also gain some ELO from his Spanish league stincts, he may be effectively 2680 now....., still some way to go to achieve the 2700 mark.....

Next up Hari's going to play in the World Chess Cup, hopefully he'll go some places this time and gain valuable ELO, which will enable him to get to that coveted 2700 mark......

In the open tournament, young Parimarjan Negi of India participated and stood a creditable shared 15th place with 5.5/9....., he is a candidate IM, waiting to get his rating to touch 2400 mark bfore getting his IM title..., he's also achieved an IM norm here, but he's already got 4 of them bfore... :)

Negi's next going to participate in the World Juniors to be held in Turkey from 8th to 23rd November......

Best of luck to Negi, to get to that 2400 mark and confirm his IM title..

Nov-04-05  samsal27: <Negi's next going to participate in the World Juniors to be held in Turkey from 8th to 23rd> Any site for this tournament?
Nov-04-05  samsal27: <Another worst thing is they have Chinese Women as a team, which is really awful, how do they thing the tournament will have any essence if they do such things as get weaker teams to play, originally Ukraine was also supposed to be playing and was supposed to be for 10 teams...... > The Chinese women have faithfully done their job by giving all four points to the Chinese men and now they will chip away at all the other teams with assistance from the men of course! Also, India with the now 3 in the top 40 rated in the World (Anand, Hari and Sasi) are a cinch for the invitation!! Shame on FIDE ...
