Aug-22-04  Dick Brain: chessbase.com and playboy.com have little in common except that they both are visited by overwhelmingly more men than women. The explains the photos I suppose.
Aug-23-04  siggemannen: Who needs chess when you can read about Manakova's deep statements?
Aug-23-04  rover: The chessbase news site has decided to reposition itself as a tabloid. I'm pretty sure that's a sound financial decision that will help both the news site and with that the chessbase group as a whole. I don't think it helps to popularize chess at all but it's actually a good indication of just how popular chess has become. There is a substantial demand for these articles. So you may even say this whole affair is positive. :-)

Ok, so much for cynicism. From a different perspective, what I found slightly troubling that she would <advise> women to follow her course. I was surprised that most women players have shown restraint and didn't answer her. Either that or chessbase is already becoming selective in it's publications...

Aug-31-04  poktirity: <Dick Brain: <acirce> you seem to be an atypical Swede at least vs the stereotypes (eg the colorful history of Swedish movies). >

Are you a fan of old Swedish films Dick Brain? ;)

Sep-07-04  Dick Brain: <poktirity>No I've just heard about what goes on in them ;) That reminds me of a documentary I saw on PBS about the days of the American gold rush, about 1849-1853 or so. One of the historians interviewed spoke of his vast collection of letters that the prospectors sent home where they would always speak of what he had heard had gone on in the saloons as if they never entered any themselves.
Sep-10-04  poktirity: Hehe Dick Brain, human nature never change ;)
Oct-16-04  Brainpoop: <Dick Brain>I agree with you; all Chess Gms should wear spandex and display a sexual poisition on the breaking surf of a sunny beach. Americans would finally get turned on to chess. MTV would sponsor such a match in a flash if Kashim and Gary would be so accommodating.
Oct-16-04  DutchDunce: There's an interesting post by a "chessie44" on the FIDE forum: http://forum.fide.com/viewtopic.php... Although I disagree with it, it gave me a chuckle. It reveals why the males are the ones complaining.

<Poor Elisabeth Paehtz, having her picture on the same page as nude Maria in the German magazine <Der Spiegel>.> Actually I'd prefer E.Paehtz in that situation. She's a cutie. :)

Apr-16-05  pazzed paun: hey what is all the fuss? -the translation of her article into English-and please anybody who reads Russian tell us if you think the two articles are substantialy different-would pass for witty banter among co-workers almost anywhere in the world. It is slightly flirty and lighthearted talk about life! She is married to a G.M.-she has every chance to have an informed and intersting view-of life and chess(long live entrepenuership! )She is also young enough not to have been mentally paralyzed by an econmic system that failed- Did anybody really truly get morally outraged over that article?
Apr-24-05  pazzed paun: I post some of greatest comments of all time and people ignore it! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?
Apr-24-05  aw1988: OK, OK! Stop rushing! We're tired people, you know...

Yes, this is an outrage. It is exploiting women for their sexuality on a chess website. This is not to be tolerated.

Apr-24-05  mack: I had sex recently, I'd recommend it to all of you.

Benzol: <mack> I really needed to know that!?
Apr-24-05  mack: <I really needed to know that>

That's good to know. Next time I do it I'll post it up here; actually, if you have an email address I'll just send the info straight to you if you like.

Apr-24-05  aw1988: <mack> Can I join your mailing list?
Apr-25-05  mack: Sure thing.
Apr-25-05  pazzed paun: <aw1988> i think you and many others missed the point.
Apr-25-05  aw1988: There is no point to get, there is only the negative and positive aspects of it.
Apr-25-05  pazzed paun: do people have an aversion to believing that some chessplayers are flesh and blood human beings who might have an interst in sex?
Apr-25-05  aw1988: Do you have any idea of the absurd format that was used?
Apr-25-05  schnarre: I see nothing wrong with the presence of an eye-catching damsel amidst the Chess pieces (though promotion-by-porn is perhaps going a bit too far).
Apr-26-05  fenno: Why there has been no discussion about the psychology of giving public statements like those Manakova has given?

It is a fact that self-confidence of most (especially younger) women is closely related to how they see their looks. The one who boasts about her own looks may well get a female opponent feel being inferior. And to have a psychological edge over an opponent (even she is previosly unknown) is good strategy.

Boasting about one's own sexual attractivity cannot harm a female player's score against male opponents, either.

Apr-26-05  schnarre: <fenno> True!
Apr-26-05  azaris: <fenno> There's actually a reverse phenomena. If you we're playing against some smug supermodel, wouldn't you want to take him/her down a peg by doing your best? I don't think confidence is all that necessarily related to exterior appearance - it would seem many beautiful people are if possible even more uncertain about their appearance.
Apr-26-05  WMD: If when playing Sharon Stone, she crossed/uncrossed her legs, that would definitely put me off my game.
