<Russiaís Pavel Maletin won the Commonwealth chess title following a 31-move draw against M. R. Lalith Babu while runner-up R. R. Laxman led an Indian sweep of the Commonwealth medals at the Clarks Inn, Pacific Mall, here on Tuesday.
Maletin and Laxman tied for the title at nine points 11 rounds. Maletinís superior tiebreak score made him the champion and Laxman walked away with the Commonwealth gold medal. Abhijeet Gupta and Babu finished at eight points. Abhijeetís better tiebreak count earned him the silver while Babu settled for the bronze medal.
Maletin received Rs. 1.60,000 and a trophy, Laxman collected Rs. 1,15,000 while Abhijeet went home richer by Rs. 50,000.>
Maletin's analyses (in Russian on ruchess.ru) of the games of the World Championship Match in Sochi are among the best. The depth of his analysis of the endgame in the seventh game of the match is fascinating (Peter Svidler: "Trust me - you don't want to miss it!")
cro777: Maletin is also the 2014 Rapid Grand Prix champion.
The final tournament Rapid Grand Prix of Russia 2014, was played on 13-16th December in Rostov-on-Don. 16 players, who scored most points in the Grand Prix rapid events throughout the year, participated in a knock-out tournament playing 2 games in each round with a time control of 15 minutes with 10 seconds increment.
Maletin defeated Morozevich in quarter finals, young star Sjugirov in semi finals and Riazantsev in the final match.
