cro777: 2016 IMSA Elite Mind Game in Huai’an, China.

In the Woman's group of the rapid tournament, after four rounds Tan Zhongyi is leading with perfect score.

"She defeated Huang Qian and Gunina playing white, as well as conquering Khotenashvil and Dzagnidze playing black.

In those four game, Tan Zhongyi showed excellent skill and played undoubtedly her A-game, dominating the position from start to the end and gave her opponents absolutely no chance."

  cro777: <WannaBe: Tan is the family name>

In modern Chinese names the family name, e.g. Tan, comes first and is usually monosyllabic.

Tan Zhongyi, age 25, was born in Chongqing, a major city in Southwest China. In the Chinese Chess League Division A, one of the strongest and longest running leagues of its kind (twelve teams are competing in 22 rounds from April to December), she plays the top women's board for the Chongqing chess team.

At the 42nd Chess Olympiad in 2016 Tan Zhongyi won the women's team gold medal and individual gold medal for board 4:

Recently, at the 1st Hainan International Chess Open Tournament (7-16 December 2016, Danzhou, China) she drew Richard Rapport:

She took the fifth place (out of 69) scoring 6/9, while Rapport was 14th with 5.5/9. The tournament was convincingly won by Yu Yangyi with 8/9.

Sally Simpson: Perhaps now she is the Women's World Championship her bio could be updated.

Currently it reads:

(born May-29-1991, 25 years old) China

She is a WGM.

And that is it.

Mar-03-17  notyetagm: Does she automatically become <GM> by winning the title? I would imagine so.

Would be embarrassing for FIDE to refer to the Women's WC as a WGM or IM.

cro777: FIDE Women's World Chess Championship (Knock Out system) took place in Tehran, Iran with 64 players from February 10 – March 4, 2017.

In the final match Tan Zhongyi defeated Anna Muzychuk on tie-break with 1,5 – 0,5. Four previous games with classical time control finished with 2:2 score.

Tan Zhongyi is China's 5th World Champion, after Xie Jun, Zhu Chen, Xu Yuhua and Hou Yifan.

This is the trophy:

Mar-03-17  dx9293: <notyetagm> Yes, by winning the FWWC title, Tan automatically becomes a GM (Ushenina also gained her GM title this way).

Automatic GM:
-Women's World Champion
-World Junior Champion
-World Senior Champion
-Reaching last 16 of World Cup

Had Tan lost in the final match, she would have only earned a 9-game GM norm.

cro777: As noted above, by virtue of winning this championship Tan Zhongyi will be awarded the FIDE title of Grandmaster.

After this success one thing Tan Zhongyi is looking forward is her hometown of Chongqing to have more chess competitions. She also said that she was very grateful to the coach Yu Shaoteng who was helping her during the tournament.

GM Yu Shaoteng, the national women's chess team coach, was also the personal trainer of Hou Yifan.

cro777: Psychology of champions: one needs to be strong not only in chess, but in the psychological sense as well.

Tan Zhongyi: "I was very calm during the entire event, I never felt stressed or under pressure. Maybe that was the reason for my success"

Mar-04-17  alexapple: <notyetagm> In fact, Tan Zhongyi already became GM by reaching final of 2017 WWCC, because she got 2 GM norms in Gibraltar Open in 2014 and 2016. By reaching final in 2017 WWCC, she would get the third and final GM norm.
