Yu scored 5.5/9 in the 9th Asian Continental Men's Chess Championship held in Olongapo City in the Philippines, scoring a GM norm. Subsequently he competed in the 1st Qin Huangdao Open Chess Grandmaster Invitational Tournament in November 2011, scoring 7/10 and a second GM norm. In January 2012, he won the 4th Chennai International Open Chess Tournament outright with 9/11 ahead of 16 GMs, scoring his 3rd GM norm. In April 2012, he received the GM title without having had any other title beforehand. In March 2013, he came =3rd (7th on tiebreak) at the HD Bank Open held in Ho Chi Minh City in March 2013.
