alexmagnus: The best Austrian player. But Austria never was a big chess nation (Steinitz is a tiny exception:))

Open Defence: I thought Vienna was the center of 19th century chess
Mar-08-09  Prugno: And he also beat Navara yesterday at the European Championship in Montenegro, although as often happens to his opponent it was more a case of David committing suicide...

Ragger appears to be a more than worthy GM, at any rate. I wonder if he plans to make chess his career or if he is a part-time player?

Mar-15-10  Daodejing: Incredible well playing Markus Ragger at the Europian Championships.

After 9 rounds he is 11th!

http://chess-results.com/tnr29567.a...

Tommorow in the last round he is playing Navara.
Hopefully with the same result as last year!
Will be very difficult with black
but with a draw he would get 7 out of 10.

Go Markus!

Sep-10-10  charms: Alexmagnus: I don't think that is a fair statement. Austria was always a decent chess nation given its size: Albin, Allgaier, Eliskases, Englisch, Falkbeer, Grünfeld, Tunç Hamarat (correspondence chess world champion), Kmoch, Kolisch, Marco, Perlis, Réti, Robatsch, Schlechter, Spielmann were/are Austrian chess players. Austria might have been the strongest chess nation around 1900.
Feb-15-11  kramputz: The comment by <Alexmagnus> about Austrian chess is the result of;"loose mouth without thinking" or lack of information. I wonder if <Alexmagnus> knows much about Austria or even knows where it is.

kingfu: Well, now. I am not sure if Austria was a chess center back then. Perhaps, we need to have The Austrian Open tournament just to test our hypothesis.

I do know that if I was going to be in a Chess Tournament, Vienna would be a good choice for a place to play the games.

We can go out after the game and get a schnitzel. We can go for a walk and hear Mozart on the square. After that, we can get a pastry and a coffee.

Once again, the True Path to World Peace is Chess and Food.

I rest my case.

waustad: I think <alexmagnus> is forgetting Carl Schlechter, who was world class before the first world war. Steinitz was from Prague, which was part of the empire, but not really Austrian.

waustad: He either sacced or lost the exchange against Jozsef Horvath today at the Husek Vienna Open today. At least it wasn't a 5 or 10 move draw like some others this round.I don't know how long this link will work, but it does now:

waustad: That game turned into a nice win for Ragger. He got advanced d-e-f pawns playing black in some sort of Slav and put together a mating attack while white was fussing around on the queen side. When the tournament is over I'll look into uploading some games.

waustad: 22 move draw today so he's tied for the lead going into the final round. Shengelia is behind by 1/2 so he has to play instead of taking another quicky draw.

waustad: I don't know who is doing the analysis on the tube of his game today, but he really sounds Austrian. He does not sound like most people who do broadcasting, but like real people on the street! This link will not last long I suspect but it works now:

waustad: Ragger has a 1/2 pt lead going into tomorrow mornings finale. He's paired with Georgiev who is in the 5 way tie for second. It will start at 10:00 AM CET. Ragger is black against the only player rated higher than he is.

waustad: In the last round he drew but both games between players where were 1/2 point off the pace were decisive so, pending tiebreak information, it is a 3 was tie for the lead with 6/7 between Horvath Csaba, Banusz Tamas and Markus Ragger. In any case he gets the top Austrian prize of 100 euros.

waustad: On the top 12 boards there was only one draw, between the top 2 rated players in the tournament. All of the rest were decisive, a remarkable result considering that this is get away day where 5 move draws are all too common.

waustad: Ragger came in first on the tiebreaks and had a 2737 performance rating.
Aug-20-12  charms: The IM doing the commentary is appearently Rainhard Lendwai. (he has a profile page.) I appreceate your interest in the Husek open. I do think that Vienna would be a great city to host a super tournament, now that Mainz, Monaco, Linares don't seem what they used to be.
