William Henry "Bill" Dodgen was president of the South Carolina Chess Association for a number of years. A founder of the North Augusta Chess Club, he was Technical Director in the Korchnoi - Mecking Candidates Quarterfinal (1974). Creator of the US National Chess Day.

  GrahamClayton: Bill Dodgen, former President of the South Carolina Chess Association. Dodgen played a key role in organising the 1974 Candidates match between Viktor Korchnoi and Henrique Mecking, which was held in Augusta.

Dodgen also played a key role in the cration of the "National Chess Day" in the United States. South Carolina had a "State Chess Day", but Dodgen quickly expanded it to a nationwide effort, and was appointed National Chess Day Chairman. Bill’s idea was to encourage local and state chapters to organize events to bring in beginners and others who played chess but had not joined the USCF.

William Henry Dodgen died Monday Dec 17 1990. Mr Dodgen 51 resided at 2008 Robin Road. Funeral services will be held at 11 am Wednesday at First Baptist Church of North Augusta. The Rev Dr Gary C Redding will officiate. Burial will be in Pineview Memorial Gardens. A native of Aiken County, Mr Dodgen was the manager of the WFAM radio station. He was nominated for the 1989 National Christian Broadcaster of the Year. He was a member of First Baptist Church of North Augusta. He was the founder of the North Augusta Chess Club, a former member of the Optimist Club and a former member of the Exchange Club. He was a North Augusta resident for 22 years. Mr Dodgen was remembered by his friend Dr Wayne Yost as a compassionate man who labored in the service of God. An abrupt tragic accident has taken the life of my best friend, Dr Yost said, yet I know that his eternal life is secure in Gods Grace. His life touched many people each day through his radio ministry.
