Women (whose chess achievements far surpass anything by U.S. women) and they profess zero interest in feminism!! It does make it seem very odd all the ponderings in the book about feminism and how unproductive it is. |

I do not feel angry but I do think there is a certain amount of media manipulation going on here involving her writing and interviews ... call it hype if you will.. there are a large number of much higher rated players who have many more valuable chess-related things to say but they do not seem to have a forum for their views- Very often J.S. comes off as very naive about many chess related things and there are many other players who much better informed and have more perpective on such subjects. I feel it was dishonest of her to not mention that she knew she was not going to play in the U.S. Championship just before her book was published. Her handlers may have believed it would hurt publicity chances for the book. try and manipulate the media and they will manipulate you!!.... the machine always wins!! |

| Jan-05-07 | | whiskeyrebel: pazzed paun, I enjoyed her book a lot, but there's no doubt she gets extra attention due to: 1) her gender 2) she comes from a chess family of note and perhaps most important 3) the fact she lives in NYC and knows the right movers and shakers in the U.S. chess scene. I do think she's done a good job at the USCF site. It looked like @*&^ before she took over. Of course it's true there are others who could have done better perhaps, but I don't think for a job like her's you'd neccessarily favor somebody simply because they're a stronger player. There are plenty of twisted loners with 2500+ ratings who might entertain hardcore players like you and I, but seem less approachable to newer players/readers. |

Regarding theories on differences between men and women playing strengths, maybe the best theory I've heard is that, as young girls, the overwhelmingly desire is harmony, to be part of something, be part of the group. If the girl beats the boy at chess, she is sort of pushing herself away from boys, away from the social scene. So, a victory at chess is a defeat in the social game. I don't know if thats an exact science, but it kind of makes sense. Being a fellow New Yorker, I couldn't help think of your comments about having a loft in the DUMBO area. I think you have to give up your first born now to get an apartment in one of those buildings, so hang on to it if you can! |
