AMEDEE GIBAUD
(born Mar-05-1885, died Aug-18-1957, 72 years old) France

[what is this?]

Amédée (Aimé) Gibaud was born in Rochefort-sur-Mer. He was French Champion in 1928, 1930 and 1935, and won the French Correspondence Championship three times (1929, 1931, 1932), but is probably best known for supposedly losing what was considered the shortest decisive game between masters: A Gibaud vs F Lazard, 1924. The game is generally considered spurious. Gibaud acknowledged losing a skittles game to a similar combination, but not in four moves.

Jan-13-09  WhiteRook48: I think the Gibaud-Lazard game never happened. It says he's champion of France 4 times. How likely is it that he's going to play 2. Nd2?! and 4. h3??

GrahamClayton: "Amédée (Aimé) Gibaud was born in Rochefort-sur-Mer. He was French Champion in 1928, 1930, 1935 and 1940".

According to 'Dictionnaire des Echecs', by François Le Lionnais and Ernst Maget (PUF, Paris, 1974), the 1940 French Championship tournament was held in Nice.

No other sources have been located which confirm that the tournament took place.

In 1951 Gibaud wrote the preface for Pierre Morra's book "The Game of Chess". He ended his preface by introducing himself as the French champion in 1928, 1930, and 1935 - no mention of the 1940 championship.
