This GM played in the olympiad 2008 and in Panamerican Team Championship, 2009. He placed 4th in Capablanca Mem. 2008 (2652 perf.). He plays regularly in tournaments in Spain and gives chess lessons (ICC: pichirri).

After many years as a chess professional in Cuba, Hernandez in the fall of 2013 enrolled in the University of Texas at Brownsville, where he is majoring in computer science and plays on the chess team ( He now plays for the United States.
