David Ireson Lynch was born in 1910 in Hastings, New Zealand. He was New Zealand North Island Champion in 1949 and won the New Zealand Championship in 1951. He was also New Zealand Correspondence Chess Champion on three ocassions in the 1940's and 1950's. In the 1952 New Zealand Championship he was the player who stopped Ortvin Sarapu from getting a picket fence of 11 wins when they drew in the last round. In the the early 1980's Eduard Gufeld and Murray Chandler both played simultaneous displays in the Hawke's Bay area and Lynch aged in his 70's drew with both. He passed away in the Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital in 2002 aged 92.
