WESLEY SO
(born Oct-09-1993) Philippines

[what is this?]
Wesley So is a Filipino chess prodigy who is currently the second youngest chess Grandmaster in the world (after Anish Giri) and the 7th youngest GM in history. Wesley So achieved the title at age 14 years, 1 month and 28 days during the 3rd Pichay Cup International Open in Parañaque City, Philippines in December 2007.

So achieved his first GM norm in the Offene Internationale Bayerische Schach Meisterschaft in Bad Wiessee, Germany in November 2006 and his second GM norm in the World Juniors Under-20 Chess Championship in Yerevan, Armenia in September 2007.

GM So has also won the World Under-16 Team Championship Board 1 gold medal with a phenomenal score of 9.5/10. In his home country, he holds the record the country’s youngest National Open Chess Champion and its youngest National Junior Open Chess Champion.

In his young but distinguished career, Wesley has competed in World Youth Championships in 2003, 2004 and 2005, finishing equal first in his age group in Belfort in 2005 alongside Srinath Narayanan, Sanan Sjugirov, and Samvel Ter Sahakyan. His other achievements include two Gold Medals in the 6th Asean Age-Group Chess Championship, Vung Tau, in Vietnam; three Gold Medals in 7th Asean Age-Group Chess Championship, Pattaya, in Thailand. In 2006, he became the youngest member of the national men's team to participate at the 37th Olympiad in Turin at the age of 12.

So won the Dubai Open (2008) in the United Arab Emirates, besting an international field that included 23 other grandmasters. In 2009 he won Corus (Group C) (2009) 1.0 point ahead of his closest rival Anish Giri.

  wordfunph: bro <obien> eto pa... 10 boards simul with 5 whites and 5 blacks for Chairman and scored an incredible 90% unlike in Fresno where he blanked the group. The lucky <Joshua> who won over GM Wes announced in Q&A that he previously lost 5 times to GM Wes in their previous encounters OTB and idolizes our Chairman no end. Mabilis tumulak ng pyesa si GM Wes, it mystifies me watching him go around the tables and moved too quick...lam na nya patterns pa lang unlike me who struggle in c3 with 1650 wahhhh! Pati nga 1000-1100 c3 players pinatos ko na harhar! Daming players nag "pass" sa sobrang bilis ni Chairman.

Go GM Wes! WCC is coming..

Good evening from the beautiful place of Carmona Cavite Philippines!

Nov-04-09   fab11mt: Mga ka barangay, <obientag> and I were just chatting at Chesscube and wondering if there's a possibility that GM Wesley can also give a simul at the "baranggay Wesley Chess Club" room. Wouldn't it be nice for our Wonder kid GM Wesley to grace the page named after him? He need to, of course sign for membership, and set a date and time that his willing to give the simul, if his time permits.

Just a wishful thinking for somebody whose far away from home.

Anybody can relay this to our wonder kid.

Nov-04-09   fab11mt: Sa World Chess Live laging nagbi-bigay ng libreng simul si GM RonenHar-Zvi and post game analysis, but GM Wesley So is very busy with studies and preparations for his forthcoming tournaments as compared to other masters.

But hey, for some of us it's just a wishful thinking!!

Nov-04-09   e5d5UziGalil: Nice article on Mr. William So, Nanobrain.
Looking at your Game with Wes is like watching the Baseball World Series. Black's batters were all grounded out, White is at bat - all the Bases are loaded and the next batter is about to hit a Grand slam.
Nov-04-09   e5d5UziGalil: ...IF There's a Will, There's a So. At least, that is what the Leny and the Patriarch did so many years ago...now Wes is ready and on the go...

  art00: < FATHER AND SON
-Cat Stevens >

<Father>
It's not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy, To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

<Son>
How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again. It's always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen. Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

<Father>
It's not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down,
if you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
(<Son>-- Away Away Away, I know I have to Make this decision alone - no)

<Son>
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside, It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them They know not me. Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
(<Father>-- Stay Stay Stay, Why must you go and make this decision alone?)

Nov-04-09   kapmigz: gandang umaga barangay!

thanks <nanobrain>, although i was in the same table and heard the same story, i never put it in the same perspective... i like the analogy between sir<william> and the parent bird. almost brought a tear to my eye.

hey, i couldn't concentrate then, coz i had an eye and an ear on the other group.. i was thinking they were having good fun there, and i am stuck with a bunch of old men... way out of my age bracket. i am awed with <shintaro go> whose face lit up as a xmas tree evrytime he speaks to wesley, with <joshua> who gave our youg gm the "0" and yet said something like "he have always admired and idolized wesley long ago" ala pacquiao-dela hoya..

anyway mahaba na yata ito! thanks to all who made it very memorable.

Nov-04-09   pinoymaster77: Good AM nanobrain,

Thanks for those sharings on sir William, I can identify with that my eldest son is now 15 years old.

I also have a buddy who's very tutok to their only child, a boy and he's now at Phil Science HS.

Nov-04-09   pinoymaster77: For fab11mt / obientag and overseas bros,

Correct me if Im wrong for those who attended, but I remember this question was posed in the Q&A either by wordfun or nanobrain (after the question on Hawaii simul) on the 'GM Wesley vs 'the world', via chesscube or cybercafe, and he answered 'yes', kelangan lang ma-schedule.
