WESLEY SO
(born Oct-09-1993) Philippines

[what is this?]
Wesley So is a Filipino chess prodigy who is currently the second youngest chess Grandmaster in the world (after Anish Giri) and the 7th youngest GM in history. Wesley So achieved the title at age 14 years, 1 month and 28 days during the 3rd Pichay Cup International Open in Parañaque City, Philippines in December 2007.

So achieved his first GM norm in the Offene Internationale Bayerische Schach Meisterschaft in Bad Wiessee, Germany in November 2006 and his second GM norm in the World Juniors Under-20 Chess Championship in Yerevan, Armenia in September 2007.

GM So has also won the World Under-16 Team Championship Board 1 gold medal with a phenomenal score of 9.5/10. In his home country, he holds the record the country’s youngest National Open Chess Champion and its youngest National Junior Open Chess Champion.

In his young but distinguished career, Wesley has competed in World Youth Championships in 2003, 2004 and 2005, finishing equal first in his age group in Belfort in 2005 alongside Srinath Narayanan, Sanan Sjugirov, and Samvel Ter Sahakyan. His other achievements include two Gold Medals in the 6th Asean Age-Group Chess Championship, Vung Tau, in Vietnam; three Gold Medals in 7th Asean Age-Group Chess Championship, Pattaya, in Thailand. In 2006, he became the youngest member of the national men's team to participate at the 37th Olympiad in Turin at the age of 12.

So won the Dubai Open (2008) in the United Arab Emirates, besting an international field that included 23 other grandmasters. In 2009 he won Corus (Group C) (2009) 1.0 point ahead of his closest rival Anish Giri.

Jan-11-07   rainbowxpress: Panalo si Wesley sa 1st round as expected!
Jan-12-07   genex: Ano nga pala ang website ng the Asian Zonal 3.3 in Vietnam, kung meron?
Jan-12-07   balweg214: You can find the pairing and result at http://www.vietnamchess.com/Tournam...
Jan-12-07   wordfun: My idol IM Wesley So won over my another idol GM Mark Paragua in the 2nd round!
Jan-12-07   wordfun: 2nd Round Shocking News!!! Untitled Nouri "GM Killer" Hamed made mincemeat of GM Dao Thien Hai! That only proved that his performance in the recent GMA Cup was not a fluke. Another hope of RP Chess...
Jan-12-07   genex: Thanks <balweg214>. I'm very much impressed with their Website! It's professionally done, and as can be expected of such website of international caliber, it is constantly updated and thus very informative. That's efficiency! Our Philippine chess organizers should learn from this formerly economically lowly Asian neighbor, which is presently transforming into an economic Asian tiger that has the resources to support their sports programs! In a few years they produced a number of GM's. Congratulations to Nouri for defeating one of them in the second round.
Jan-12-07   genex: Can somebody show me why Dao Thien Hai in his second round game with our Nouri Hamed can’t do RxR mate in response to Bd5 in move 30 (or he could even do it in move 29)? Did I miss something somewhere, or is there something wrong with the annotation?

Jan-12-07   anakbuwan: I had the same question...maybe they there's a missing move like RxR..BxR, Bd5...just guessing though.
Jan-16-07   NOKRO: I have a feeling that Dao lost by time forfeit, to explain what seem to be illogical final moves.

Dozy: I play at the Rooty Hill Chess Club in Sydney's west and we have so many Pinoys playing there that news from home is always welcome.

One guy asked me for a story about Wesley So for the web page. It's fairly basic and you can find it here http://www.rootyhillchess.org/so.html.

If anybody has any more information about Wesley that they'd like to add to that story (preferably with sources identified) I'd appreciate an email, either via the Rooty Hill web page or direct to me at footloose@tpg.com.au

Thanks

Jan-21-07   rainbowxpress: <Rooty Hill Chess Club in Sydney's west> Is this place within Blacktown City?

Dozy: Yep. About 5 kms west of Blacktown station. Do you live in the area?
Jan-22-07   rainbowxpress: Nope! But Cr Allan Green is a friend of mine. He's proposing the establishment of Blacktown City-Metro Manila Freindship Group. I'm one of his ambassadors here in Metro-Manila. Allan is due to come next month for three weeks. Oooops! we're OT already...

Dozy: Blacktown Council seem to be one of Sydney's more progressive suburban councils. Last year, to mark the centenary of local government in Australia, they organised a sports festival comprising events from many sports.

Rooty Hill Chess Club were invited to participate and we staged a simul (http://www.rootyhillchess.org/cente...) and a junior tournament (http://www.rootyhillchess.org/junio...)

I didn't meet Alan Green but worked closely with Cr Steven Bali who threw a lot of energy into both events.

I don't know the demography of the Blacktown area (I live on the Blue Mountains, about 30 kms to the west) but if our chess club is an indication there will be many Pinoys living there so the idea of a Blacktown-Manila friendship group would probably get a lot of community support.

Jan-23-07   rainbowxpress: Could you give me your contact number/details at qcbahaghari@hotmail.com so I can ask Cr Allan Green to contact you before he comes over here in the Phils? Maybe, you could collaborate with him to make his cause really a success. Thanks.
Jan-31-07   rjsolcruz: Last year, Wesley conducted a 20-board simul match on the occasion of MERALCO Employees' Day as arranged by MERALCO Chess Club. He scored 19 wins & 1 draw; from Danny Degollado.
