via <jessicafischerqueen> Protip: Set all the "auto download" switches on "manual" for everything- including "safe companies" like Microsoft itself. Give yourself a chance to be alerted to an update and educate yourself about it (via internet search) before allowing it.

When you download an app, go very slowly through the process. Read every word. NEVER just obey "recommended."

Check (or uncheck) any box that will give you bonus BLOATWARE extra downloads.

Finally- before downloading anything or permitting an official "update" on anything (java, microsoft, google, adobe) Google it first.

Sample search terms:

"Adobe update @#$%ed my computer"

"Is Ed's Video Converter Safe?"

"Do I really need IE 10"?

Find out BEFORE you update or download.

Jun-11-12  LoveThatJoker: <Alien Math> I appreciate you posting this on my forum!! I will be honest with you and tell you that, although I love the problem-solving element of Mathematics, I don't understand what the Goldberg conjecture and the Riemann hypothesis mean.

I therefore will refer your question over to <agb2002> and see if he can help in elucidating this.

<agb2002: Hi LTJ, thank you for thinking of me for this question. However, my math background and professional experience are much closer to numerical and statistical analysis (mainly applied to industry) than number theory, a branch of pure maths.>

Whoever writes about chess problems will sooner or later face the question of how to write in his own alphabet composers' names whose original writing is in a different alphabet. Various approaches, with a variety in linguistic precision, have traditionally been used to answer this question.

Alien Math: ## Are your friends or family who use Internet Explorer patched?

IE remote code execution vulnerability being actively exploited http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/201...

A critical Internet Explorer vulnerability, announced and patched by Microsoft in June's Patch Tuesday, is being exploited in the wild.

The vulnerability is CVE-2012-1875 (don't expect any detail - this link is just boilerplate stuff), patched in MS12-037.

So much for the hackers' efforts.

Your response is easy: if you haven't patched already, do so right away!

Thanks to a XDA-developer member, asdfzz, the “What’s This Song” is now available even on phones running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

All you have to do is download the Google Sound Search APK http://www.mediafire.com/?41mu57uje... and install it like you install any third party application. Add the widget to your home screen and you are ready to go.

Alien Math: How can you detect if your computer has been violated and infected with DNS Changer? | http://www.dcwg.org/

This page describes how you can determine if you are infected, and how you can clean infected machines. To check if you’re infected, Click Here http://www.dcwg.org/detect/ . If you believe you are infected, here are instructions on how to clean your computer.

If you are not affected by DNS Changer then do nothing.

If the Check-Up Site indicates that you are affected then either follow the instructions on that site or go to the “FIX” page. http://www.dcwg.org/fix/

That works out to be 0.01% of the world's devices. That's correct, one hundredth of one percent of all the internet devices.

Alien Math: DNSChanger: Removing the virus just got a lot harder (+video) http://www.csmonitor.com/Innovation...

If you didn't act fast enough to the DNSChanger scare, fixing the problem will be a lot more difficult today.

First, here are several clean-up programs listed by the DNS Changer Working Group. These programs should remove the virus and related programs, but you'll need to get them onto the infected machine through a USB drive, CD/DVD, or some other way that does not involve the Internet. You can do that on your own, or have a computer professional do it for you.

Hitman Pro (32bit and 64bit versions)
Kaspersky Labs TDSSKiller
McAfee Stinger
Microsoft Windows Defender Offline
Microsoft Safety Scanner
Norton Power Eraser
Trend Micro Housecall
MacScan
Avira
Once your computer is set with a legitimate DNS, you will want to check your router, if you have one, to make sure it is also using the proper address.

You will want to check all of your financial accounts, and other sensitive information sources, to make sure they have not been affected. You will also want to change your passwords.

If you still find that you are not clear of the problems hatched by DNSCharger, experts encourage you to call your Internet service provider for help.

Alien Math: Microsoft patches critical drive-by IE9 bug, Windows zero-day Fixes 16 flaws, picks up IE update tempo
http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...

Computerworld - Microsoft today patched 16 vulnerabilities, including one in Windows that's been exploited for weeks and two in Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) in the first-in-years back-to-back browser update.

Of Tuesday's nine security updates, three were rated "critical," Microsoft's most-severe threat ranking, while the others were pegged as "important," the next-most-serious label.

"It's being leveraged in the wild, so [MS12-043] has to be at the top of everyone's list," echoed Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Security.

"The security updates for Microsoft XML Core Services 5.0 are unavailable at this time," Microsoft said in the accompanying write-up.

July's nine security updates can be downloaded and installed via the Microsoft Update and Windows Update services, as well as through WSUS.

Alien Math: Symantec antivirus software update crashes some PCs | Bug in software used by businesses caused some Windows XP-based machines to crash repeatedly with a "blue screen of death." http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-57...

An update earlier this week to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 antivirus software for businesses caused some Windows XP-based computers to crash repeatedly with a "blue screen of death," the company revealed on its Web site.

"On July 11th, 2012 Symantec Security Response started receiving reports of customers experiencing blue screens after applying the July 11th revision 18 definitions," Orla Cox, of Symantec Security Response, wrote in the post. "Machines may continue to blue screen after they reboot. This problem only appears to occur on Windows XP machines."

In an update, the company said the crashes were limited to XP machines running Endpoint Protection 12.1 and certain software from Norton. Once the cause was identified, Symantec issued a rollback of signatures on Thursday, the company said.

Alien Math: Five hundred new fairytales discovered in Germany
Collection of fairytales gathered by historian Franz Xaver von Schönwerth had been locked away in an archive in Regensburg for over 150 years | http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/201...

A whole new world of magic animals, brave young princes and evil witches has come to light with the discovery of 500 new fairytales, which were locked away in an archive in Regensburg, Germany for over 150 years. The tales are part of a collection of myths, legends and fairytales, gathered by the local historian Franz Xaver von Schönwerth (1810–1886) in the Bavarian region of Oberpfalz at about the same time as the Grimm brothers were collecting the fairytales that have since charmed adults and children around the world.

Von Schönwerth compiled his research into a book called Aus der Oberpfalz – Sitten und Sagen, which came out in three volumes in 1857, 1858 and 1859. The book never gained prominence and faded into obscurity.
