My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 38 y/o, living in Israel and hoping to ummigrate* to Canada eventually. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since. :)

<<<<<<< MAJOR CHESS SITES <<>>>>>>>>>

<< Correspondence chess <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is a relatively new site. Quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means HEAVY on the resources. If you have an older computer or limited net access, don't even bother to register. Note for ChessCube players: I'm finding that the site works best (i.e. is least buggy) with Google's Chrome browser. If IE, FireFox, or Opera are giving you trouble, try accessing the site with Chrome (despite its not being one of the browsers recommended by them).

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <World Champion Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

No need to refund anything, I like to help out cg every now and then anyway. You can pass on the favor to somebody else some day, if you want. My first membership here was also a gift, so that's what I've been doing too.

  Annie K.: Have fun with it, <Mark>. :) Don't forget the Opening Explorer - a powerful research tool, I've learned most of my chess right there, at the earliest stages - is now open to you as well.

I'm tired after work today, so just feel like playing blitz and hanging around - I'll get to some longer writing on the weekend. :)

Meanwhile, this just in:

[Event "FICS rated blitz game"]
[Date "2012.03.28"]
[White "AnnieK"]
[Black "NN"]
[WhiteElo "1527"]
[BlackElo "1054"]
[TimeControl "600+0"]
[Mode "ICS"]
[Result "1-0"]

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. c3 h6 4. d4 a6 5. Bd3 cxd4 6. cxd4 d5 7. e5 Nc6 8. O-O Be7 9. Nc3 Bb4 10. Ne2 Be7 11. Ng3 Bh4 12. Nxh4 Qxh4 13. Ne2 Nxd4 14. Nxd4 Qxd4 15. Bb5+ 1-0

I really can't say whether this is a Sicilian or a French Advance - strictly by "first moves", it's the former, but I played it more like a French Advance from there, and eventually won with a classic French trap. :)

Mar-29-12  MarkFinan: Hi Annie.. Yes iv'e been busy with the opening explorer, the Guess the move , and the sacrifce explorer, i feel like a kid in a sweet shop haha..

If chess was promoted better (somehow) and became as popular as, say, basketball is in America (to me its just netball.. But..) this site could be as big as Facebook for chess players!

It really is that good!

So im more than happy with your gift :)

  Domdaniel: Paging Ms Shirley Yanno. Paging ...

Ah, there you are, Ms Yanno. I'm here to tell you in person that we, that is the management, well, all right, use the perpendicular pronoun, I have decided ... to terminate your contract. Please don't cry, Ms Yanno. Security will escort you from the building.

Why? Well, it's the way you spell your last name, ackshully. We have no problem with 'Shirley', but as you might imagine, we get applications from thousands of Shirleys. You stood out because somebody thought that Yanno was a bit like 'You Know'.

But we've had the phoneticians in for the annual review and, well, it isn't like 'you know' at all, is it, Ms Yanno? The short 'a', the double 'n, the short 'o' ... it's hard to avoid putting the stress on the first syllable, isn't it?

And we've had an innaresting letter from a Mr Shirley Ulrich Noah, who goes professionally as Shirley U Noah. We think it sounds better. Plus - this is off the record - he's a man, so he won't be running off to, well, breed, or have those feminine fits of the vapours.

No, Ms Yanno, I'm not saying that *you* ever ... is that a gun, Ms Yanno? Why yes, Ms Yanno, Shirley, of course someone of your experience would do very well in a management capacity. I was about to suggest it ...

[a shot rings out]

Okay, boys, take [her/him/it*] away.

  Domdaniel: <Annie> Hi there. That story, like me, has no morals, okay?

I just used the excellent 'ummigration' link in your profile to read the conversation in my forum, from about, uh, nine months ago?

My, we were all so intelligent back then. What happened to us?

I need to start some kinda 'bring back intelligent conversation' movement. Well, *I* don't need to, necessarily, but somebody should.

I'll do my bit by avoiding all conversations about who said what about whom, when and why.

Marginal futility, negative utility.

As ever,

  Annie K.: <Dom> speaking of some good bits, I recall the conversations we had, here at the Club as it were, one year ago. The Italian puns were fun, in particular. :)

Which ties in, in all sorts of ways, as follows. One is, that exactly one year ago, I was in Rome - and pretty darn sick incidentally, which factoid I was not, of course, going to allow to get in my way of enjoying the best of art and architecture to be found on the planet. :p

One branch offa this is to note that I got sick <again> at the exact same time of year this year. :\ Maybe hay fever or something, or just end-of-winter carelessness. So I've been mostly busy barking this week - not that this would be so unusual, except it's literally in this case. ;s

Another branch: While in Rome... do as the tourists do, of course, what else? Buy some memento, that is. Out of old habit, mostly, I bought a jigsaw puzzle. Just a small 1000-piece one, nothing serious (she says, looking over at the 6000-piece puzzle of Bavarian Castle Neuschwanstein hanging on the wall to her left...). ;)

I haven't really done a jigsaw puzzle in many years. Anyhoo, just a couple of weeks ago, I remembered the box, and hauled it out of the closet. It's a fine photo (probably taken with panoramic photography) of the ceiling of Capella Sistina. Took me about two nights to assemble it. There's nothing like doing a jigsaw puzzle, for familiarizing oneself with the finest little details of a large picture.

While actually standing in the great chapel, one tends to gawk more at the central themes - The Last Judgment Wall, and the series of Genesis scenes running down (or up, rather) the center. And there's a crowd, and noise, and one's blasted traveling companions want to move on, now they can put a check in their "visited" box - and while I never had much problem ignoring such suggestions, it is also true that there's not much place to sit, and one's neck also does get tired. ;p

So, it really takes a jigsaw puzzle to notice many of the "minor" details - all the supporting cast of angels and cherubs and demons and whatnot flanking the "main" pictures, and the minor saints and some totally non-Xtian characters - most notably, the Sibyls - off on the "margins".

Heh - for the purposes of (jigsaw) puzzle-solving, it helps to realize that the more grotesque or obscene any figure's posture is, the more likely it is to be an angel or cherub - presumably this is to demonstrate how innocent they are. :D

<My, we were all so intelligent back then. What happened to us?>

There is one who does not belong...

Regards,
Sibylle

Be well. I'm off to try, again, to play chess. Futile exercise, I suspect, but we all have our little, eh, monkeys.

I haven't tried a jigsaw in a while. But my brother does Escher ones, ordered from Escher central. They look quite good, really, when finished.

  Domdaniel: <Annie> -- <the more grotesque or obscene any figure's posture is, the more likely it is to be an angel or cherub - presumably this is to demonstrate how innocent they are>

Innaresting theory, quite possibly accurate. I'm not a big Renaissance expert, and I've never visited Rome.

Which won't stop me from proffering an alternative theory. The grotesquely erotic angels are there to satisfy the carnal appetites of popes and cardinals.

An old geezer -- let's call him Pope Innocent -- whose armies are off turning Bohemia into a killing field -- stares in rapt fascination at a naked angel. He feels a stirring in his loins.

"This is not sinful", he thinks. "How could it be, for I am Christ's Vicar on Earth and that is one of God's messengers. What I feel is an elevated physical resonance between myself and the angels, like the kind of thing that Galileo talks about regarding planets. Quite holy and celestial, this stirring. Must remember to write this down and put it in a Bull when I've, ah, finished, ah, contemplating the, ah, pull."

Burroughs woulda written you a dirty version but I run a clean ship.
