Feb-23-07   Plato: <You asked me that before. but you keep deleting my posts, or closing shop?>

That's because he was the victim of a debate with me that didn't go all that well for him... So he put me on his ignore list to prevent me from posting anymore, and then deleted the entire argument -- but "remembered" to leave in the last word... which happened to be his final insult :)

Luckily, I had predicted that he would delete the debate, because it was far too embarrassing for him to let others read it. So I copied and pasted the whole thing before he did. Now I have the whole thing on file :)

Feb-23-07   Plato: <JTA> censored me on his forum and then deleted the whole debated except for his own last word (which was, characteristicall, an insult). Apparently he prefers to delete a lost debate rather than admit defeat. Debating with him on his forum is impossible, since he just deletes the posts that refute him, leaves in his own last word, and then censors me to top it off!

So, with <AugustAle>'s kind permission, I have decided to reproduce the last part of the debate -- about the ad hominem tu quoque fallacy -- which is something that <JTA> is horribly confused about. <JTA>'s comments are in black, <Plato>'s comments are in red...

But first I'll give <JTA> about an hour to delete that final insult of his, which was the only part of our debate that he left in. If he chooses to leave it in, I will repost everything right here...

Feb-23-07   Plato: For now, since he didn't bother to delete his last word, I'll just go ahead and include my own:

<JTA: It's ashame you got so defensive about a relatively small thing. You remind me of the person who says "I've made up my mind, so don't confuse me with facts!" I've given reasons, and when you can't answer them you resort to censoring me. All you're doing is repeating yourself ("You're confused. End of story.") without being able to provide arguments. That's because there are no reasonable arguments you can provide about this; your mistakes are clear as day, you simply lack the maturity to admit them and learn from them.

Unfortunately, it seems there is only so far you can go trying to learn real philosophy from Google.>

Feb-27-07   Plato: <AugustAle> I noticed that <JointheArmy> deleted more than a few of your posts, too, like the one where you pointed out that it's not a fair "debate" when he gets to erase his opponents arguments at will while leaving in his own. Ah, well. He still has me ignored, so I can't post on his forum anymore. No great loss, since he is not the most rational of thinkers.

willyfly: yo! <AugustAle> I just found out you had posted to my member page. I didn't even know people could do that. I'm sorta new to how it works here at CG. Guess I should scroll down more often. No tellin' what I might find. So where you been? Aint heard from you since I explained how mirrors don't reverse left and right. Now I wanna know how you make those colors.

willyfly: btw - thanks for your comments to <shr0pshire> I found his post same day I found yours (a long time after the fact) I was amused but did not respond to him because as you said I did not mention him by name because I do not care to get into a 1 on 1 with him (or anyone). I became very irritated in that game by the mindset of playing for the draw and I found it ludicrous that they couldn't understand why team white did not accept our draw offer and then even more ludicrous that someone would confront a member of the other team for forcing us to play a few more moves. That's like telling your opponent he's a jerk for trying to win.

AugustAle: Without being too reredundant: dittos again. The nasa channel is the greatest. My dads cable service doesn't carry it so i tape a few hours when i have a chance and then he edits them to dvds for me. I hope you had a chance to catch the landing replays from the most recent sts 116. Back when i programed a little pascal, fortran, cobal, basic, etc i used to land the shuttle on a simulator. A far cry from video games of today; You start at retro for reentry, and then input stick controls using numeric values. Just up down left right. There was of course no gui, just a numeric velocity (airspeed), position and elevation response. A successful landing is one that does not return a negative elevation response!, ouch.

The trick to landing the shuttle is to scrub speed off while maintaining lift, and you are literally flying a brick. There are two methods to achieve this; the first is a series of attitude up and down and flare moves. This works, but it is difficult to to complete in time to not overshoot the runway. The second is to execute a deep broad continuous flare, circling the cape once, just in time to line up and pull up for the landing. Either way, you must aim your brick for the ground, it is not normal flying.

Anyway, if you have a chance to checkout the landing from the most recent mission, it's breathtaking. Starts as they initiate the 330 degree scrub turn, then you hear "elevation fifteen thousand feet, one and a half minutes from touchdown". Woah! Watch the elevation in the heads up display. Note that Commander Oefelein has the ship aimed into the ground about a quarter mile in front of the runway until only a few hundred feet from the ground. Amazing, but that whole mission was amazing. I especially like the way Captain Curbeam's (Beamer) "shake it like a blanket" suggestion was turned into a nasa "procedure" within a couple of hours, complete with new terminology and metrics.

OK, back to work, see you soon. Wheres the chess in this?, im pretty sure astronauts play chess. Maybe one or two even belong to cg.com. We should work on that.

willyfly: STS-116 was a great mission. Robert Curbeam - what an awsome guy! Seems I recall reading about Fuglesang being a chess player. Wonder what his rating is. I was interested in him mostly because he is Swedish and sew am I. But I'm three generations removed from the <old> country. Don't speak a single word of it. Guess I'm just an American now. But I'm lobbying hard for Swedish Pride Week to become an official holiday. You know how us Swedes are. I always thought I was average, but it's just because I'm Swedish.

I used to be real good at a video game called <Space Duel> It was the only video game I got good at and I think I may have been the only person who was good at it. It was never very popular because most people would get frustrated before they figured out how to coordinate the tethered spacecraft into an effective firing pattern.

Nasa TV is the best! I watch it on the internet. Don't have cable. Every day I follow the adventures of Spirit and Opportunity, the two Mars Rovers at thier website http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/home... and also the Cassini spacecraft at Saturn http://ciclops.org/index.php?flash=1. How about the Ice Fountains of Enceladus? Amazing! And that Proffesor Porco who is the lead of the imaging team. Whew! What... A... Babe! I remember her from when Voyager II flew past Neptune and into Star Trek future history back when she was just a young undergraduate. She's gotta be the sexiest astrophysicist in the business. Oh... the gravity waves.

willyfly: I saw the documentary they made about Kasparov and Deep Blue. They tricked him - giving him an easy first game and then beefing up the computer overnight. After the second game Kasparov beat himself. He was so convinced he'd been cheated. In a way - he was. I've no doubt we've reached the day when people can't beat computers at chess. It's a shame all this cheating I read about. Sometimes I think chess is a lot better at the lower levels.
