I live in Cambodia, where there are a small handful of very good players (in the 2100-2400 ratings). I've been playing for most of my life of 30+ years, but have only recently found a practical way of daily study of the game. At long last, I feel that I am beginning to grasp the means of engaging 'better than beginner' level players in meaningful games.

Bare Beginner: Wow! Very nice game. I don't usually enjoy Sicilians (which are generally beyond my comprehension), but this one was exciting.

Bare Beginner: Awesome attacking tactical play by Shirov. He seems to have had total commanding initiative the entire game; and no matter what Blk tried, continued to impose his will. The sacrificial tempters are the sort of moves I'd love to be able to play in real games. I totally agree ...

Bare Beginner: Not related to this game, but I wonder if someone could explain what it means to say that tournament games (at Grand?Master level) are often decided "before" players get to the board ... through their "preparation", particularly openings. How is it possible for players to ...

Bare Beginner: Short shrift is being given to today's pun. Should it be "Eat my Shorts"?

Mar-29-07 Ulf Andersson vs Petrosian, 1983 (replies)

Bare Beginner: I've been telling my students about the importance of pawn formation as a deciding factor in strategic planning. This game seems like a great example of how one side (W) takes advantage of the weaknesses left by the other's pawn moves.

Bare Beginner: Love that Kf2 move. Hope I can use it sometime without being subsequently crushed.
