Nov 2009: WCC qualifier ideas

Oct-29-09    Bdellovibrio: Hello, all. Come to my forum to submit any of your thoughts on how World Chess Championships should be run, including qualifying stages and the culminating event itself. This is the theme for November of 2009. And don't worry if you think your ideas are not the sharpest; it shouldn't be too hard to do better than FIDE, after all. Oct-30-09    Shams: dump it, it's an anachronism. Chess should be like tennis, four majors a year, qualifying tournaments to get in. this way nobody saves their prep. Good idea for a discusssion forum- I recommend you drop a message here- User: eyal and also on the <Magnus Argument> page, although some retard might blow the whistle. Probably not though, since they are all set to anoint Magnus Dei as the King already. <eyal> is a chess historian who knows as much as anybody about the current state of the WC cycle, such as it is- he's very busy but I know he has a lot to contribute to this topic. 3. I recommend a full return to the "classic era" system with Zonals, Interzonals, and Candidate's matches in a three year cycle. In addition, all of the games would be played with proper time controls (the long ones). And no "queue jumping" either. Good luck with your project and feel free to drop messages and adverts in my forum. Oct-31-09    FSR: These 12 and 16-game matches, and fast time controls for some games, are a travesty. I too liked the good old days with Zonals/Interzonals/Candidates Matches - except that the 12-12 retention of title and rematch provisions are problematic. Note that Botvinnik exploited those provisions to the hilt: he was world champion for 13 out of 15 consecutive years even though he NEVER won a match as world champion. (He won the 1948 five-player match-tournament after Alekhine's death, drew Bronstein in 1951 and Smyslov in 1954, lost to Smyslov in 1957, won the rematch (i.e., as the challenger) in 1958, lost to Tal in 1960, won the rematch (again, as the challenger) in 1961, and lost to Petrosian in 1963. Alternatively, a double round-robin among the world's top 8 or so, with slow time controls, is not terrible. Oct-31-09    talisman: i agree with FSR. one of the things i miss about the good ole days is that in the good ole days i knew what was going on. first big change was turning to candidate matches instead of a candidate tournament. probably a good idea. a fairer way to find a candidate. but this change too changed history. Tal could and would continue to win tournaments that included that included korchnoi and spassky, but in a match...not in the mid-sixties. i'll take either of the Zonal good ole days. by the way, is moro participating in the world cup? Who knows? who knows anything about the WCC now because FIDE will change it tomorrow.		A free online game for all chessgames members!
