I'm now a Chess addict (having given up nicotine). A totally hopeless case. I've had more handles than anyone I know. Wally has left the theatre, Paul Redman, Vintage47 and Z X Kronge are just a few of the gems I've used. Great site, thank you MaxII!

Aug-30-17 Petrosian vs Fischer, 1958 (replies)

Beancounter: This is game 3 in Fischer's 60 memorables. He called it 'Bear Hug' and comments on Petrosians move 8, "Reckoning he can afford this loss of time in view of Black's misplaced 'KN'."

Oct-07-16 Kasparov vs Nakamura, 2016 (replies)

Beancounter: It's games like this that make me realise that on my best day I'm not a tenth as good as these two on their worst.

   Sep-14-16 Stahlberg vs Stein, 1965

Beancounter: Indeed. One wonders why Stahlberg didn't resign after black's 29th as the only defence involves the loss of a rook, which left him three pawns down. I can only guess that Stein's flag was hanging but that's just pure supposition.

Oct-21-15 Korchnoi vs Ivkov, 1955 (replies)

Beancounter: According to GM Dzindzichashvili in a story recounted on Chess.com, Petrosian loved the KID, 'because it kept my family fed for 20 years'.

   Oct-19-15 Vaganian vs A Planinc, 1975 (replies)

Beancounter: I missed this although I did realise the white Queen needed to be distracted. What I overlooked was the knight on b3 covers d2 as well as giving check.

   Aug-10-15 R Govedarica vs Gligoric, 1991

Beancounter: How many of us would have agreed a draw after move 17?

Jul-11-15 Timman vs Petrosian, 1973 (replies)

Beancounter: Early lunch, Jan, Tigran?

May-19-15 Rubinstein vs Schlechter, 1912 (replies)

Beancounter: This game was from Rubinstein's golden year of 1912 when he won five successive major tournaments. I believe Larsen was the only other player to achieve such a feat. Should Rubinstein have been able to raise the necessary finances to meet Lasker in 1912 or thereabouts I think ...

Apr-08-15 Chekhover vs Dus Chotimirsky, 1949 (replies)

Beancounter: Easy for a wednesday

   Dec-21-14 O Roething vs Capablanca, 1910 (replies)

Beancounter: Roething was seeing ghosts. The game is even after 30.Bxg8 Nxg6 31.Rxe7 Nxe7 32. Bxc Rfe8 33. Nd6+ Rxd6 34. Bxd6 fxg 35. Bxg =
