Civhai: As some others, I tried Re8+?? first, but then it was hard to get the queen side knight into play and without him, it was difficult to find anything, so I tried Qe8+ next, which worked.

I think it is not an absolutely necessary condition, but it is true in 99% of the cases.
There is no guarantee that there always is such a player, although there probably usually is one.
