Mar-29-13 Carlsen vs Ivanchuk, 2013 (replies)

Drew Smith: I think Carlsen was hoping for Ivanchuk would play 27...dxc4, with the idea of 28. Ke4 opening the d-file for the rooks and all sorts of complex counterplay. Ivanchuk's 27...Ne7, 29...Nd5 and 31..Nxf4 idea was very prudent. From that point I was pretty sure that Carlsen had ...

Mar-29-13 World Championship Candidates (2013) (replies)

Drew Smith: Someone earlier asked when Carlsen last lost a classical game. His last classical loss was Vs Caruana at the Bilbao Masters back in September 2012. His last classical loss with the white pieces was Vs Karajkin at Wijk aan Zee in January 2012.

   Sep-13-12 Bologan vs Naiditsch, 2012

Drew Smith: @Master of Defence The problem with your line is that white need not play 37.Qf6+. Better is 37. Ng6+, leading to 37...Kg5 38. Ne7+ Kf4 39.Qf6+ Ke4 40.Qd4 mate.

Drew Smith: One of those games that reminds you that, no matter how much we play the game and analyse it with machines, chess still retains the capacity to surprise you with something never seen before. Grischuk is one of my favourite players and he's in incredible form right now. Such a ...

   Nov-20-09 World Cup (2009) (replies)

Drew Smith: First round match ups that intrigue me include: Sargissian Vs Li Chao Naiditch Vs Yifan Hou So Vs Guseinov Caruana Vs Bruzon Keep an eye on Le Quang Liem too. Plays very exciting chess and is much better than his rating suggests. Could be very dangerous. Has Tkachiev ...
