Dec-10-05 Bannik vs Tal, 1955

Eric Xanthus: Nice puzzle! I didn't see beyond the perpetual check that black can have (which had to be wrong, this is Tal after all!) because I got hung up trying to clear room for an eventual Rxe2. I didn't appreciate the perpetual that white can get if the black rook leaves f8. Very nice ...

Eric Xanthus: The real cautionary tale is using a bad move in your analysis line (33.Qh6+?). 32Bxe6+ is not quicker. 32.Qh7+ is mate on move 34, as <boomie> begins to show (he's left out 33..Bf7 34.Qxf7#) and so is 32.Bxe6+ (32..Bf7 33.Qh7+ Kf8 34.Qxf7#).

Eric Xanthus: Yes, <panigma>--but then 8.Qxg8+ Nxg8 9.Nxe4.

Eric Xanthus: Looks like 34.f4 fails to 34..Qh5 and black cuts into the kingside even faster, <snowie1>.

Eric Xanthus: <TigerPawns> It wouldn't be the first time I've been accused of being pedantic. ;) I do apologize, but I just can't let an incorrect statement like <Atahualpa>'s go. :)

Eric Xanthus: I picked 30..Nex4 and saw this continuation, but what happens if white doesn't take the knight? Say, 31.Qe1...I guess the attack will break through, but I don't quite see it (it's kinda late...).

Eric Xanthus: <patzer2> I think for your first puzzle 45.Rb8 Qxb8 46.Qxf6+ Kxh7 47.Qxf7+ Kh8 48.Qh5+ and the rook falls. The second seemed simpler to me: 46.Qf8+ Kxh7 47.Qxf7+ Kh8/6 48.Rh4+ and the queen will have to fall. What is my prize? :)

Eric Xanthus: Actually I thought this was the same game as last week--is it not a mistake?

Eric Xanthus: Sorry <Atahualpa>, don't know how I missed that. I swear it wasn't there when I posted...and thanks for the movie title, <Trooper2>. Of course it was Telefon...fun movie, and I don't even like Bronson.

Eric Xanthus: You are mistaken <svbabu>. There is a black pawn on g6.
