YouTube videos I've done on opening traps:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKVY... (Caro-Kann) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wT_L... (Modern/Robatsch) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZk_... (Sicilian)

I am a USCF master at OTB chess, and a USCF senior master at correspondence chess. I played in the 1997 USCF Absolute Championship (open to the top 13 correspondence players who accept their invitations), scoring 6-6 (+2=8-2). I was a teammate of ChessGames co-founder Alberto A Artidiello on our high school chess team, which won the Illinois state championship my junior (Albert's senior) and senior years.

I have contributed to many chess articles on Wikipedia under the handle Krakatoa, notably "First-move advantage in chess," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-... "George H. D. Gossip," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George... and "Swindle (chess)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_... The first two of those have been Today's Featured Article, the highest honor a Wikipedia article can receive, one attained by about one out of every 1,400 articles. My user page is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:K....

Twenty-one of my games are in chessgames.com's database: see Frederick Rhine. My favorites are F Rhine vs D Sprenkle, 1981, K Thompson vs F Rhine, 1992, and F Rhine vs A Boerkoel, 1996. The first two of these were both published with my annotations in Chess Informant, and cited in the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings. My 18th move (18.Nxd6!) in Rhine-Sprenkle was voted the 8th-9th most important theoretical novelty in Volume 32 of Chess Informant. That game also occupies an entire chapter in all three editions of "Beating the Sicilian" by John Nunn. It is game 218 in "1000 TN!! The Best Theoretical Novelties" (Chess Informant, 2012).

I composed this problem, which Pal Benko published in "Benko's Bafflers" in Chess Life, May 2006:

White to play and draw (Rhine, 2005)

The solution is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalem... Both of these compositions appear in Harold van der Heijden's endgame study database. http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/7...

Mar-19-12  quantum.conscious: <fsr> , i asked you a question at <rogoff> forum , if you have time.

i am reposting it here :

<fsr> , I am right now watching this movie - 'reign over me'. Don cheaddle is a dentist. one of his female patients tells him that she wants to give him blow job. Don spurns her and tell her to find another dentist. as it turns out , that woman sends some legal notice threatening to sue him for sexual assault and dentist is in trouble.

that is just a movie , right? what could that dentist have done differently?

i am asking because in USA , such sexual lawsuits are so common .

so, what do you say about that scenario from that movie?

thanks, <fsr>.

FSR: <quantum.conscious> I often have that problem in my law practice. No, not really. It's a pretty far-fetched scenario, but the dentist seems to have acted appropriately. There is no shortage of frivolous lawsuits. Cf. http://www.ftc.gov/foia/frequentreq... (Federal Trade Commission complaint filed against Sony by nine female fans, alleging that Sony falsely presented singer Clay Aiken as heterosexual, when in fact he is gay).

I don't care for that revision. Here's the original:

Could you change it back?

Mar-21-12  DrywallRickshaw: Hi there,
I'm a long time chessgames lurker. I just wanted to say that I've always appreciated your kibitzes, especially when you've acted as the voice of reason during a Goldsby tantrum (Those tantrums are better than any sitcom to get a laugh).

I also noticed you said somewhere you were a lawyer. I'm a 1L at Vandy, I was wondering if the legal market was as bad they say on all the blogs/everywhere. I get the feeling I'm going to go from graduation straight to the zombie apocalypse from the walking dead.

Memethecat: But the western world is definitely becoming more litigious. In the past 10-15yrs here in the UK, peoples attitudes have changed enormously on the issue of can I get sued for this or that small thing. I honestly saw a bag of peanuts in the supermarket recently with the warning "May contain nuts" that's funny. But the bigger picture is people aren't trusting & helping each other as freely as they once did. That cant be good.

benjinathan: <Shams> I would guess that she might have a decent human rights case.

Her case would be better in Ontario where there is specifc protection for trannies:

http://www.ohrc.on.ca/en/issues/gen...

I think Ontario is the only province with specifc protection. Nevertheless, in other provinces it might well fall under discrimination on the basis of sex.

FSR: <Shams> If the Boy Scouts can ban gays, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_Sc..., and the Jaycees can bar women, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert..., I don't see why a beauty pageant wouldn't be allowed to ban transsexuals. Moreover, no federal statute has been construed to prohibit discrimination against transgendered people, although some state and local laws protect them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_... (Following your hypothetical, I'm assuming, perhaps erroneously, that Canadian law is similar to that of the United States.)

btw, the Boy Scouts also discriminate against non-believers; they threw me out almost 40 years ago because I didn't believe in God. The Girl Scouts have much more liberal views on such matters (which recently caused one Republican legislator in Indiana to foam at the mouth, http://pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsbu...). I buy Girl Scout cookies, but will never give a cent to the Boy Scouts until they change their bigoted ways.

benjinathan: <FSR> In Canada I seriously doubt whether the boy scouts can ban gays. Unless the the Jaycees are a fraternal organization they cannot ban women - there is an exemption in the Ontario Code for fraternal organizations.

It appears from their website that they do not:

http://www.jcicanada.com/

And it appears that Canada's scouts do not ban gays or atheists, I am sure at least partially because they would likely be found to be breaking the law if they tried:

http://www.commondreams.org/headlin...

http://canadianatheist.com/2011/08/...

<FSR> So I think there is probably a big difference in the law between our two countries on this point. In large measure that is because here it is seldom succesfully argued that a law providing rights, especialy anti discrimination rights, for one group violates the rights of another group.

FSR: <Shams> Cute. Jesus' most zealous followers don't seem to do so well with his teachings.

<hedgeh0g> So far I see 1.c7+ Kxc7 (1...Kxc8? 2.Rh8+; 1...Kd7? 2.Nb6+; 1...Ke8? 2.Rh8+ followed by a knight check) 2.Rc1+ Kd8 (2...Kd7? 3.Nb6+; 2...Kb8? 3.Nb6 Qa7 4.Rc8#) 3.Nb6 Qb8 (3...Qa7? 4.Rc8#). Probably some sort of zugzwang thereafter; I'll have to look at it with a board.

hedgeh0g: <FSR> Not quite, but you've got the right idea. Solve it in your head - it's much more satisfying! ;)
Mar-31-12  Jim Bartle: I figured it out, with help from the computer. Really nice, as it involves every piece on the board.
Mar-31-12  Jim Bartle: A bit of time has passed, so:

1. Nb6 Qa7 (otherwise Rh8) 2. c7+ Kxc7 (forced or loses queen) 3. Rc1+ Kxb6 4. Rc8 and eventually black will have no move except to play Qa8 or Qb8. White only has to be careful to choose between e3 and e4 according to black playing his e-pawn.
