FiveofSwords: @maxxlange if you are going to play 4. cxd4 you really ought to continue with 5...e5. Trying anything else is very dangerous and could likely give white an extra tempo in a position he already understands. 5...e5 is perfectly playable.

FiveofSwords: black loses to tactics in the petroff very often...its very tactical and white has the time advantage. The most embarrasing thing is how simple they often look after they happen...but otb its not so simple to find them because theres so many other options you are also ...

   Feb-18-13 Petrov Defense (C42)

FiveofSwords: about this cochrane knight loss stuff...its actually a knight for two pawns...so in term of material you are only one pawn behind. It is not so extreme as you say. I dont recommend playing it if you are trying to 'refute' the petroff. Its not a refutation. But if you jsut want ...

   Feb-18-13 Bishop's Opening (C23)

FiveofSwords: @gely Im not sure your assesment of lasker or korchnoi are correct...they both really did try to always be logical..this attitude sounds more like the infamous player larsen who probably wouldve performed much better if he did not have that tendency. tactics isnt the only way

   Feb-18-13 Grunfeld, Russian Variation (D81)

FiveofSwords: @mindset this line is certainly fine for white...but if you already have been studying the exchange variation...well thats better imho...in fact its why i stopped playing the grunfeld

FiveofSwords: blacksburg, you do have more options than c6 and na5, if you dont like those positions (im not fod of them either). 1e4 e5 2 Nf3 nc6 3 Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5. ed Nd4!? is interesting, the fritz variation, but extremely sharp. Very dangerous for white if you knwo what you are doing.

FiveofSwords: well I think chess is all about making the other guy make a mistake. If there are no mistakes its just a draw. You cannot have an advantage in any position if you preculde the possibility of mistakes.

   Apr-05-10 King's Knight Opening (C40) (replies)

FiveofSwords: drunkenknight, i dont really understand this 3. d4 in your line It seems to simply help black. I would think its much more natual to play 3.Nc3 to attmept to exploit the odd position of the queen.

FiveofSwords: peoples dismissive attitude toward the f-d vairaiton is imo just a stupid side effect of trying to let comps think for them. If they ended up being on the white side of the line in otb play, i'll put 5-1 odds on them losing...EVEN THOUGH I do think it is 'objectively' ...

   Apr-05-10 Bishop's Opening (C24) (replies)

FiveofSwords: Ive decided i kinda prefer the bishop's opening to Nf3 recently, since im now a good enough player to think for myself about openings. Philidor, centuries ago, was amazingly spot on, imo, when he also preferred it, due to the fact that white leaves open the possibility of f4.
