Hi, I'm Alfredo Vargas, 55 years old. I graduated as a CPA in 1984 at Universidad La Salle in Mexico City https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unive...

In 2010 I was a very active member of the cg.com team in the game Chessgames Challenge: The World vs N Pogonina, 2010 .The legend of the <Spacebar Masters> started there (see description below).

In 2011 User: chessmoron invited me to participate in CG.com Masters - Machines Invitational (2011) tournament as Golden Executive / Houdini

Since July 2015 I am the Game Prediction Contest Manager, and this forum is currently the place to participate in. Thanks to User: YouRang

In January 2016, User: Annie K. and I shared the Caissar's Award for the 2015 Most Constructive Member. The Caissars chessforum (kibitz #1914)

Predict the # of moves at OhioChessFan chessforum organized by <chessmoron> and/or predict the final standings of tournaments at lostemperor chessforum

<Brief History of the Game Prediction Contest>:

This contest was created and originally hosted by <cu8sfan>, but he discontinued hosting the contests due to time constraints at work. <YouRang> took it over, created the 1-2-3 Ranker, the Betting Ranker and developed the CONMAN software (short for Contest Manager) and hosted the contest for almost 10 years, but some personal changes have led him to stop running it.

<Objective>:

Have fun predicting the outcome of each game in each round, and seeing how well your predictions compare to those entered by other contestants. You win by having the best overall prediction performance.

As with the Olympics, the top 3 placeholders will be honored with 'medals' (gold, silver and bronze), and the gold medal winners will be inducted into the HALL OF FAME (see below).

There will be a few different ways to determine a winner, as discussed under "Scoring Methods", below.

<Rules>:

1. Enter your game predictions for a round BEFORE any games for that round begin. It is okay to enter predictions long in advance (e.g. you could predict all rounds at the start if you want).

2. Make sure that when you enter game predictions for a round, that you include ALL games in that round, within a single post. If you miss one game, all of your predictions for that round will be ignored.

3. You may change your predictions for a round by re-submitting ALL of your predictions for that round (you must re-submit predictions for all games in the round, even if you changed a prediction for only one game).

4. Keep in mind that I'm using software to process all of the prediction posts. If you enter a post that 'looks' like game predictions, it will be counted as game predictions. If your prediction post contains typos, they become subject to my interpretation of your intent. But if the intent strikes me as being ambiguous, then I must reject your predictions for that game, and thus for that whole round -- so please be careful.

5. A post containing predictions should have one line for each game prediction. The line should be of the form:

    [whiteplayer] - [blackplayer] [outcome]

Here are some examples:
    Anand - Topalov 1/2
    Leko - Kramnik 1-0
    Adams - Polgar 0-1

DON'T forget the hyphen between the player's names. (The software can usually figure out what you mean if you deviate a *little* from this form...)

Old 6. Please do not enter predictions that mimic the robots (e.g. pick all draws in every round like DRAWER). I don't award medals to people who make such predictions since it would be unfair to the robots who don't earn medals (BTW, it is okay to mimic the MONKEY robot). This rule was in force until the GPC for The Gashimov Memorial 2018 tournament.

New 6. Starting with the GPC for Norway Chess 2018 Tournament, in order to be eligible for earning medals, a limit of 90% of draw predictions will be in effect. The rounding rule is half to odd.

For instance if a tournament has 45 games, then 45 x 90% = 40.5 is rounded to 41. So, the limit of draw predictions for that tournament would be 41.

The robots don't earn medals.

<Scoring Methods>

There are 3 different scoring methods, which means that there are actually 3 contests in one. Consequently, we could have as many as 3 different winners (or perhaps one triple-crown winner!)

1. Standard Ranker (created by <cu8sfan>)

The winner is simply the person who finishes with the most correct predictions.

2. 1-2-3 Ranker (created by <YouRang>)

This contest makes it is more rewarding to correctly predict the outcome of a decisive game than a drawn game. You earn 1 point for correctly predicting a draw, but 2 points for correctly predicting a white win, and 3 points for correctly predicting a black win. The winner is the person ending up with the most points.

3. Betting Ranker (created by <YouRang>)

This contest gives greater rewards to those who have a knack for predicting upsets (i.e. games that most other people thought would have a different outcome). Each game prediction is treated as a $1 wager. All of the money wagered on that game is divided up equally to those who correctly predicted its outcome. If you're the only one who got it right, you've hit the jackpot! The winner is the person ending up with the most $$$.

<Notes on Scoring Methods>

For the "Standard Ranker" and "1-2-3 Ranker" reports, you will notice that there are four "robot" contestants who serve as comparison benchmarks. These are as follows:

1. WHITER = Always predicts white to win.
2. BLACKER = Always predicts black to win.
3. DRAWER = Predicts every game to be drawn.
4. MONKEY = Simulates a monkey that just picks white, black or draw at random, with equal chances for each outcome.

<Miscellaneous comments>:

• I am not always online when the games for a round begin. It would be helpful to me if someone who IS online when the games begin to post a message in this forum simply stating that the games have begun. This lets me know the cut-off point for accepting new predictions for that round.

• TIP: It's easy to get busy and neglect to enter your predictions on time. If so, you'll miss a round, which greatly diminishes your chances of winning. Avoid this by entering a few rounds of predictions in advance. You can always revise them later if you like.

1)As a dismissive term: arybkanator, afritzionado, ahoudiniado etc, one who blindly follows top computer lines; therefore, not worthy (indignus) to play against one of the best female chess players in the world, with current rating over 2500 and IQ of her husband 150.

2)As a badge of pride: the specific, mostly positive emotion that is product of independent self-reflection; some social psychologists identify it as a proof of a very high level of play of the World Team.**<In its strict signification, denotes an advanced chess player guiding and interpreting computer analysis in a skillfully masterful manner.>

Please join me in congratulating the gold medal winners of the Norway Chess 2018 Game Prediction Contest. Their performances shall be memorialized forever (or for an indefinite period of time, whichever comes first) in the <Hall of Fame> (see my profile above).

We hereby confer upon the following, with all due pomp, the title "Hall of Famer" (or HOFer for short):

[*] Was already in the Hall of Fame

The Hall congratulates HOFer <alfamikewhiskey>, who seized the Betting Ranker lead back in round 5 and successfully hung on to it. Also, he had a last round good enough to reach 1st place in 1-2-3 Ranker to win his 1st double-crown. Besides, he won the bronze medal in Standard Ranker. Now, he has 9 career gold medals, and 12th overall and moved to the 7th place in the career Hall of Fame standings.

Congratulations to HOFer <SwitchingQuylthulg>, who after a dazzling late charge in both Standard Ranker and 1-2-3 Ranker, won a double-crown to push his career total to 32 medals including 12 golds, which move him to the 4th spot in the career Hall of Fame standings.

Congratulations to HOFer <Count Wedgemore>, who was between the leaders for most of the tournament, and finished with gold in both 1-2-3 Ranker and Standard Ranker. He has now won double-gold in back-to-back prediction contests. In his brief prediction career, he has won a total of 6 medals (including 4 golds).

Congratulations to HOFer <chessmoron>, who finished with a big 'best predictor' performance to assure himself first place and the gold in 1-2-3 Ranker and two bronze medals from Standard Ranker and Betting Ranker to increase his impressive career medal collection count to 38 (including 13 golds) and remain in the 3rd spot in the career Hall of Fame standings.

Honorable mentions:

- The Hall confers honorable mentions to HOFer <Penguincw>, who came up with a final-round jackpot to steal the silver in the volatile Betting Ranker. He has medaled in this Ranker in each of the last FIVE tournaments.

This concludes the Prediction Contest for Norway Chess 2018. Thanks to all for playing!

Hope to see you for the next contests, which will be ..... Dortmund 2018* (14 - 22 Jul) featuring: Kramnik, Giri, Nepomniachtchi, Wojtaszek and Duda; followed by Biel 2018* (23 Jul - 1 Aug) featuring: Carlsen, Mamedyarov, Vachier-Lagrave, Svidler, Navara and Georgiadis.

Stay tuned!

*A quorum of 10 contestants will be required.

WinKing: Thanks <Golden Executive> for running & hosting this contest! A tough tournament for you guys to run with the Ding incident.

Congratulations to all of the medal winners! Kudos to <alfamikewhiskey>, <Count Wedgemore> & <SwitchingQuylthulg> all winning double gold. I'm not sure if I ever remember 3 Double Crowns being won in any event. Also congrats to <chessmoron> on picking up his 'lucky' 13th gold in this contest. Well done all!

Count Wedgemore: Thank you, <Golden Executive>. As always, a superbly run contest, And this time, because of Ding iren's withdrawal, it must have been a bit difficult to organize and make the necessary adjustments. Well done, my friend!

Big congratulations to all the winners (which includes..moi := )

<In his brief prediction career, he has won a total of 6 medals (including 4 golds).>

I plan to climb fast up the HOF leaderboard..look out, everyone. LOL.

Penguincw: Firstly, I'd like to thank <Golden Executive> for hosting. You did a great job as always, and I applaud your effort and decision on what to do, when Ding Liren withdrew.

And wow, even I did not see that coming - a silver in Betting Ranker. But of course, the real highlights are the 3 double crowns. Wow. Congrats to them and the other medalists.

Hope to see you next time.

Heh, nice! Dortmund is very considerate to chess game prediction contest hosts.

Most tournaments don't do this because they don't want players to know in advance who they'll be facing (ex. to prep for it), but at the elite level, that could mean preventing pre-arranged draws... ;)

But Dortmund has some lower rated players, so I expect fewer draws.
