Revised, in response to overwhelming popular demand!

I am an American, born (gulp) in 1950, who has lived in Peru for most of the past 30 years. I write and publish books on natural areas and archaeological sites around the country, especially in the Andes. Some of my most enjoyable games have chess have been played at campsites beside glacial lakes or at the foot of 6000m peaks. I was not accused of using Rybka during these games.

Reading and posting on chessgames is a great way to postpone the never-ending work of writing and editing.

I'm not a very strong player, and have never played a rated game or in anything beyond informal tournaments. I do play often against my implacable Hiarcs (I've upgraded from MacChess) and am gaining valuable and seemingly endless experience in holding the draw while playing the weaker side. Hiarcs does NOT like to accept draw offers!

I very much enjoy chessgames, and not only on the subject of chess. To those who complain about off-topic discussions, my only answer is that I enjoy chatting with the kibitzers here a lot more than those on sports or politics websites. More civilized.

Jim Bartle: I doubt turtle blood would help in blitz or rapid. Whatever happened to all those Chinese women distance runners? They seemed to win everything for a while, then disappeared.

Jim Bartle: I tried to calculate that a couple of years ago. A player gets his first serve in 60% of the time and wins 70% of those points. So there's a 42% chance he will win that point. If he wins 40% of his second serve points, it's better to take a chance on the second. Of course you can

Jim Bartle: Very similar, with a thousand times more money.

Jim Bartle: The second woman was arrested and cuffed solely because she refused to give her name. No question about that. The policeman clearly said he didn't think a crime had been committed. The first woman was never even asked her name, contrary to your claim. The accuracy of your claim ...

Jim Bartle: <They are the artists we are the critics. The Kibitizers.> Which is as it should be, since we kibitzers know far more about chess than the actual players.

Jim Bartle: I guess Gelfand saw his king couldn't move and held on in the hope he could sacrifice all his pieces.

Jim Bartle: <That's used for irrelevant professional players, like Karjakin, who will never be relevant to chess throughout their lives. His only claim to fame is being the youngest (and possibly ugliest) GM ever.> But allegedly being 'ugly.' That's relevant.

Jim Bartle: <gokusano> A person has had probably 50 handles over the years and is currently using four, but that has never bothered you.
