Revised, in response to overwhelming popular demand!

I am an American, born (gulp) in 1950, who has lived in Peru for most of the past 30 years. I write and publish books on natural areas and archaeological sites around the country, especially in the Andes. Some of my most enjoyable games have chess have been played at campsites beside glacial lakes or at the foot of 6000m peaks. I was not accused of using Rybka during these games.

Reading and posting on chessgames is a great way to postpone the never-ending work of writing and editing.

I'm not a very strong player, and have never played a rated game or in anything beyond informal tournaments. I do play often against my implacable Hiarcs (I've upgraded from MacChess) and am gaining valuable and seemingly endless experience in holding the draw while playing the weaker side. Hiarcs does NOT like to accept draw offers!

I very much enjoy chessgames, and not only on the subject of chess. To those who complain about off-topic discussions, my only answer is that I enjoy chatting with the kibitzers here a lot more than those on sports or politics websites. More civilized.

Jim Bartle: As I understand it, the split-fingered fastball developed in the 80s by Mike Scott and others dives at the last instant and is hard to distinguish from a fastball. So a pitch comes it at knee-level and a batter has to decide in a milisecond if it's a fastball or a splitter. If ...

Jim Bartle: Well, they lost the World Cup Final in 2014, by 1-0 in extra time. They defeated Holland, a top team, in the semis. Not exactly an embarrassment. All five play for Argentina.

Jim Bartle: My cholesterol level shot up just by opening that link. Do you ever watch Seinfeld? Kramer flipped out because the lights of a Kenny Rogers restaurant kept him up at night, then he ended up gorging himself there. Don't remember the details.

Jim Bartle: Andy Murray just played Karlovic. Now he has to play Isner. He must be thinking of wearing body armor. A few years ago Isner and Karlovic played doubles together. Once the opponents came out for the warmup wearing helmets and bulletproof vests.

Jim Bartle: This is the same Thiel? Quite a story, I can see reasons both for and against financing a lawsuit like that. Now I know why Hogan wouldn't accept any kind of settlement offer.
