Revised, in response to overwhelming popular demand!

I am an American, born (gulp) in 1950, who has lived in Peru for most of the past 30 years. I write and publish books on natural areas and archaeological sites around the country, especially in the Andes. Some of my most enjoyable games have chess have been played at campsites beside glacial lakes or at the foot of 6000m peaks. I was not accused of using Rybka during these games.

Reading and posting on chessgames is a great way to postpone the never-ending work of writing and editing.

I'm not a very strong player, and have never played a rated game or in anything beyond informal tournaments. I do play often against my implacable Hiarcs (I've upgraded from MacChess) and am gaining valuable and seemingly endless experience in holding the draw while playing the weaker side. Hiarcs does NOT like to accept draw offers!

I very much enjoy chessgames, and not only on the subject of chess. To those who complain about off-topic discussions, my only answer is that I enjoy chatting with the kibitzers here a lot more than those on sports or politics websites. More civilized.

Jim Bartle: OK, so he's honest because he says exactly wht he thinks. The fact a lot of it is just plain false doesn't matter.

Jim Bartle: What did you expect Carly Simon to sing about? How great it is, or how tough it is, to be rich and beautiful? Maybe she could have sung Martin Mull's "Suburban Blues": I woke this afternoon I saw both cars were gone I woke this afternoon (Lord mama) I saw both cars were gone I ...

Jim Bartle: Speaking of Cal football, it's been mediocre at best over the past 50 years. A few good years but generally pretty bad. Yet Cal has had a string of good quarterbacks: Joe Kapp, Craig Morton, Joe Roth (died young from cancer), Steve Bartkowski, Vince Ferragamo, Aaron Rodgers, plus

Jim Bartle: <Man, thought he retired 10-years ago with the Dodgers!!! (It's his son, Jr. Playing for Texas, man, I'm getting old...)> Maybe they can trade him for Pedro Martinez Jr.

Jim Bartle: <And when that time comes, it will be his decision and his alone.> True, but I am confident he would not make such an important decision without listening to the advice of the denizens of the <edmund beronio> page.

Jim Bartle: <It seems Yi commits mistakes in a lifetime what Wesley So and Magnus commit in a day. A characteristic of a true champion.> This from the same poster who boasted for years that Wesley So made fewer "red moves" (errors) on Chessbomb than any player. How times change.
Jul-21-15 Karpov - Fischer World Championship Match (1975) (replies)
Jim Bartle: I get it. 10-9 for the champion is "clear superiority." 10-9 for the challenger isn't.

Jim Bartle: I never saw "Wagon Train," though I know it was a huge hit. We didn't get a TV until 1963 or 1964 and I think it was ending about that time. I sometimes go on binges watching "Gunsmoke." It's simple but it's good. I prefer the early years with Dennis Weaver.
   Jul-16-15 Fischer vs W A Nyman, 1964 (replies)
Jim Bartle: I don't see how working extremely hard disqualifies a player from being a prodigy. I could have worked twice as hard as Fischer and never have become a GM. The work was backed by extraordinary talent, as proven by winning the US championship at age 14.

Jim Bartle: <This would make the score 8-8 so, in order to win the title, the challenger would need to win two games but the champion would only need to win one game to retain the title.> The wording is sloppy, as happens with quickly written posts, but the meaning is clear. For ...
