| I am currently 30 years of age, born June 11, 1979. I first learned chess at the age of 13 from a very unusual friend who presented himself as a great chess player. I was beating him at the game within two weeks. I quickly became the best chess player in my middle school, for awhile, I thought I could be great. When I was 14 I became a member of the USCF (before the internet age, I found out about the USCF because the information was in a "battlechess" game I had rented for my Nintendo). I kept playing, finding few who could defeat me, then one day a letter game, stating that the Johnstown Chess Club would be starting up again (they had gotten my address by paying the USCF for all the members addresses in the area). I went to the club, and finally found people who where better then me. I kept playing on a regular basis for another 3 years, but my skills basically platoed. I played 12 rated games, ending up with a rating of 1250. So clearly, I am not that great. I got out of the habit of playing, for years, but in the past year I have started playing again. I hope to some day get my rating up to the 2000 level...but that seems unlikely. |
