I am currently 30 years of age, born June 11, 1979. I first learned chess at the age of 13 from a very unusual friend who presented himself as a great chess player. I was beating him at the game within two weeks. I quickly became the best chess player in my middle school, for awhile, I thought I could be great. When I was 14 I became a member of the USCF (before the internet age, I found out about the USCF because the information was in a "battlechess" game I had rented for my Nintendo). I kept playing, finding few who could defeat me, then one day a letter game, stating that the Johnstown Chess Club would be starting up again (they had gotten my address by paying the USCF for all the members addresses in the area). I went to the club, and finally found people who where better then me. I kept playing on a regular basis for another 3 years, but my skills basically platoed. I played 12 rated games, ending up with a rating of 1250. So clearly, I am not that great. I got out of the habit of playing, for years, but in the past year I have started playing again. I hope to some day get my rating up to the 2000 level...but that seems unlikely.

JohnstownChess: @4theloveofchess actually a brown belt in Gracie BJJ is very good. The Gracies do not give out black belts the way your strip mall karate McDojo does. Very few gracie BJJ black belts in the world. Many very good MMA fighters will only have a brown belt, and it is true that ...

JohnstownChess: @ M.D. Wilson I was a bit off..they think his height was 5"6.5..which is still taller then the old estimate of 5"3...again..that is because they converted his height incorrectly. in fact, he was slightly taller then the average frenchmen of his day...feel free to look into it
