My philosophy when playing chess has changed quite a bit ever since I became a member of <> The fundamental lesson that I have learned is that one's eyes have to be conditioned to identify the <most forcing moves> in a given position. All checks, captures, & threats must be examined, FIRST! The player who truly masters this methodology will be a force to be reckoned with. Thanks to this terrific site, I feel that I'm on the road to becoming one of those players.

I was deployed to the Middle East for over 5 very long years and <> was invaluable in sustaining my sanity while insanity raged all around me. Big time thanks to this site.

Favorite Quotes:

"I missed a shot." <Every Chess Player>

"Activate the Rook." Karsten Mueller

"Many have become Chess Masters, but no one has become the Master of Chess." Siegbert Tarrasch

"The stomach is an essential part of the Chess Master." Bent Larsen

"Whoever sees no other aim in the game than that of giving checkmate to one's opponent will never become a good chess player." Max Euwe

"I have never defeated a healthy opponent" Savielly Tartakower

"It is always better to sacrifice your opponent's men." Savielly Tartakower

"The blunders are all there on the board, waiting to be made." Savielly Tartakower

"I don't believe in psychology. I believe in good moves." Robert James Fischer

"Petrosian has an incredible tactical view, and a wonderful sense of danger…No matter how much you think deep…He will smell any kind of danger 20 moves before." Robert James Fischer

"It is to Petrosian's advantage that his opponents never know when he is suddenly going to play like Mikhail Tal." Boris Spassky

"Nobody see's combinations like Rashid Gibiatovich Nezhmetdinov." Mikhail Botvinnik

"To win against me, you must beat me three times: in the opening, the middlegame, and the endgame." Alexander Alekhine

"There are two types of sacrifices-sound ones and mine." Mikhail Tal

"Centralize and Sacrifice." Mikhail Tal

"They can only take one at a time." Mikhail Tal

"I drink, I smoke, I gamble, I chase girls, but, postal chess is the one vice I don't have." Mikhail Tal

I play in the U1800 section in tournaments and in my club. My favorite players are Spassky, Capablanca, Tal, Alekhine, Tartakower and Robert James Fischer.

I have a special fondness for Paul Morphy. Chess would not be what it is today, if not for Morphy.

Of the current championship contenders, I really like Fabiano Caruana. I think Fabiano is destined to topple Magnus Carlsen.

I think <> is an amazing website. I have learned so much and had tons of fun everytime I visit. Keep up the good work. I would like to see a bit more humility from some members. Bragging about how quickly they can solve a puzzle or taking special delight at making the first post on a page, does not enhance my online experience.

<My Forum is open to anybody who wishes to post something constructive> Chess topics are the priority. I'll post some positions of interest either from my own games or from puzzles I run across. Everybody is encouraged to post a solution.

Mating Net: 57...Bd1 is next and White can't hold the Queen side pawns.
   Dec-22-15 O Chernikov vs Savon, 2002
Mating Net: 45...d3 is textbook interference to promote the a pawn, or to force White to invest a Rook to prevent the promotion.
   Dec-18-15 I Upton vs R Granat, 2000
Mating Net: 47...Rf2! is a slick intermezzo. The Rook is immune from capture as the e pawn would cost White his last piece.
   Dec-18-15 O Dementiev vs Dzindzichashvili, 1972
Mating Net: One of the best two movers. You have to FORCE your opponent into unfavorable piece alignments. 61...Rh1+ certainly does.

Mating Net: The technique exhibited by 35...Rb4! is in the category of "must know" for the endgame tactician.
   Dec-17-15 D G Baird vs Steinitz, 1898
Mating Net: White makes a last ditch attempt to save the game with 68.Nxa5 hoping for 68...c1Q when 69.Nb3+ would fork the royal couple. The old warhorse Steinitz was never going to fall for that trick.

Mating Net: A cruel, ironic twist in this game is that Black mercilessly exploited White's weak, doubled pawns, but ended the game with doubled pawns and a winning position.

Mating Net: I've been out of the net for the lst few days guys, so sorry about that.

Be more optimistic Switch, the Finns have some serious momentum now and have a great chance regardless of who they play in the final.

WannaBe: In other news, John Scott was voted to the All-Star game. =))

Gooooooo Enforcers.

Mating Net: A bit of a throw away game by the Kings, never generated any offense. A nice home stand coming up, GKG!
Premium Chessgames Member
SwitchingQuylthulg: FIN-RUS 4-3, after overtime. That's all that needs to be said.
Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: Regarding the contest, it actually wrapped up yesterday with Switzerland staving off relegation and the semi-finals not going anyone's way. So the final standings are as so

User, Score

♔Mating Net, 5
♔SwitchingQuylthulg, 5
♖Penguincw, 4

Out of 9.

But you know, I never actually specified whether or not "CAN vs. <USA>", <USA> is the bronze or gold medal winner. Oh wait, I did. *facepalm*

Anyway, host team has now won the tournament 2 years in a row. Hoping that streak will continue. Russia has also won 2 silver in a row. I'm calling to down, <Canada>-Russia is the final next year.

I also keep mentioning how 1998 was the last time the Canadians failed to make the SF. In 1998, guess who beat who 2-1 in OT in the final. Yep.

See you guys later...

5. USA 2745

<On Jan. 18, 1958, winger Willie O'Ree became the first black player in the NHL as he took the ice for the Bruins in their win over the Canadiens.>

Penguincw: Unbelievable, the Penguins beat the Flyers for the first time in the regular season since October 17th, 2013. Between that date and today, Phillies went 8-0-0.

WannaBe: Wonder where have <Mating Net> been. Hope all is well with him.
Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: I don't want to reveal too much information, but this is what I feel like I can reveal:

He and I exchanged emails in July, and have exchanged conversations back and forth via. email about once or twice a month.

On Wed/Jan/06, I sent him an email, talking about the New Year, and chess and all. The very next day, he replied, saying he's "really tied up", and to give him a couple of days, as he's got lots to tell me.

He hasn't replied since.

I sent him another email a week later, not sure if he got it yet. According to his profile, he visited <cg> today, so I guess he checks maybe once or twice a day.

WannaBe: Kings wallop'd them Boston Bruins last night 9-2, what is really strange is that nine different players scored goal for LA.

With 9 goals scored, you'd think someone had a hat trick, or two goals scored. But nope!

perfidious: Wild lose game, coach as Bruins win at Minnesota, HC having recently received vote of confidence.

Rough night.

Penguincw: McDavid > Eichel, as he scores 2 goals, including the OT winner in Buffalo.

EDM 2, BUF 1

BTW: I believe the roster for the World Cup, Team North America is to be announced soon. Eichel and McDavid seem locks, the rest, unsure.

Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: <Mating Net>, buddy, you there?

The Kings recently clinched a playoff berth. Next step is division. They have a 4 point lead on Anaheim with each team having 11 games to go. LAK also leads by 5 in ROW and differential, +18 (but Anaheim ahead in points scored in games between them, 6-2). They will meet once before in LA, Game 81.

Conference, I see they have a good chance.

Penguincw: Hi <Mating Net>. Would you like to participate in the Olympics tournament (predicting the men's ice hockey playoff bracket) on my forum? Unfortunately there are only a few hours left, but if possible, I can make it just quarterfinals and beyond only. Closes Feb/19 10:10 pm, Eastern time.
