NakoSonorense: Hey, <WannaBe>! Excited about the World Series? A friend of mine asked if I wanted to go and I said yes, without a second thought. I figured the cheap tickets would be no more than $200. A bit pricey, but reasonable considering it's the WS and it's been 29 years. ...

WannaBe: <NakoSonorense> You know what I don't miss about LA???

It took me an hour, to go from 5 to the 405, past the 101, to get to Jackie Robinson Stadium on Wilshire Blvd. Next to the VA hospital.

It then took me 90 minutes to go from the stadium to La Habra, going on the 10 to the 60 the 57...

On a freakin' Saturday, in the afternoon!!! The gosh-dang 405 was a parking lot, if I had stayed on the 405 to go to Long Beach, it'd be another freakin 100 minutes before I get to LAX!!

  NakoSonorense: Howdy all,

My membership will expire soon, but I will not renew since doing so will cut into my beer money. I haven't been very active anyway, so it's not worth it for now. Maybe I'll come back later.

In the meantime, if you need to tell me something, drop a note on <WannaBe>'s forum (hope he doesn't mind!), as I will be reading that page religiously from now on.

Ok, I don't know what list he's talking about, but considering how careless I am, I have no doubts that there were mistakes in my list.

<Jan-27-16 OhioChessFan: <2008 <NakoSonorense> correctly predicted two high payoff games in the final round to steal the gold from <OhioChessFan> by 16 cents!. Came from 3rd place.>

IIRC someone had an entry that round that wasn't valid as they didn't include one game. That cost me what would have been my first gold. And one person entered the contest for that round, and that round only, for no discernible reason, and the extra dollar they put in the jackpot likewise cost me the gold. Not that I'm bitter or anything.>

Forgive and forget, Ohio... Forgive and forget.

I still remember when I won that. It was ridiculously close.

<Mar-14-16 WannaBe: Prof. Shapley have passed away, he was always an interesting figure at Math & Science Hall at UCLA

That photo could have been any day on campus, he's always dressed like that. Scruffy beard and all.

He also had a teaching position at Econ Department (Ralph Bunch Hall, if I remember correctly), even though he was a full tenured professor with the Mathematics Department.

Never had the pleasure or the smarts to take a class with him, wonder what it would have been like. I wonder if <NakoSonorense> took any class with him.>

No, I never did. Even though I was in both Math and Econ departments, I don't think I ever saw him. I did take one or two classes with Miech, who I know you and another user remember. I forgot who it was, <Gregor Samsa> maybe?

<Apr-29-16 Penguincw: As always, thank you <Golden Executive> for running a fabulous contest.

Congrats to <lostemperor> for winning his <4th> double crown. Also congrats to <SwitchingQuylthulg> for winning a betting crown gold. Huge gold for him, as he now ties <NakoSonorense> for most crowns in Betting Ranker. He is also now <4th> all time in the HOF, and has 22 medals, which is the <4th> most.

Among non-gold medalists, congrats to <Keyser Soze> for winning 3 medals. Also congrats to <FSR> for winning 2 silvers and moving to the top spot in purgatory. Oh, and congrats to <Karposian> for winning a bronze. This is the <4th> time he has medaled in the GE era.

Hope to see you all in about <4> weeks.

Damn, four.>

Those tournaments were fun! I stopped participating a long time ago. When I did stop, I think I was tied for first or second in the gold medal count. I see now that many have passed me.

<Sep-18-16 WannaBe: Okay, memory's coming back a bit, the winner was <NakoSonorense>, but I'm too lazy to search through Kibit'z Café to find out what it was...>

<Sep-20-16 <WannaBe> <# of kibitzes in total: 3,759,666> <I realize this number could be a little behind, since it's updated, and not a live number> It's recomputed every day around 4am. <1. On average, how many kibitz are made in a day, now> It varies on a number of things, especially if there is a big tournament going on. Roughly it goes from 400 to 2000, or maybe 3000 if it's something like a WCC. Sunday (our slowest day) clocked in at 515. <I remember (very vaguely) some celebration/prize a few years ago, was it for 3M Kibitz?> It was the 1 millionth. <And if so, will there be prize for 4 millionth kibitz'r?> I doubt it; if I recall people were just running around posting empty nothings, and the winner literally posted simply <<"Did I win?">> It was fun for a few hours but not very productive.>

How dare you, <>! It was not "Did I win?" The post read "I'm da winnerrr!"

You can see it here:

The Kibitzer's Café

That was was in 2007, almost 10 years ago. I remember being late for class because I was waiting for the 1,000,000th post. Good thing I had my priorities straight back then.

<Jan-02-16 OhioChessFan: No disputing there are some terrific players. There are the usual suspects consistently on the leaderboard. But I have also noticed a former yearly winner who routinely ends up with negative tens of thousands.

As for the luck, I guess I mean that as opposed to the rest of the leg when a well considered bet is made, the all-in bet that is not the result of the same set of betting principles, but the fact that time has run out is what drives the decision. I am sure you're aware of people in the Games Prediction Contest who fall behind early, and spend the rest of the contest picking only decisive results, most of them wins for Black. Not because that's a well considered decision, but in the hope of getting lucky that one of them hits and they'll get a cheap gold medal in betting ranker, while finishing dead last, a distant dead last, in the other 2. It really does spoil the fun, methinks. Nako has made a career of it and I find it greatly annoying and very unsporting for what is simply supposed to be a mildly pleasant diversion.

Am I off on a tangent? I might be. I don't mean to suggest the all-in bet is as bad as the Games Prediction example. Anyway, maybe this is just some random venting. I don't know.>

The forum where this post was made is closed now.

Ok, come on now, OhioChessFan>. Are you still bitter you lost that one time by 16 cents? That was in 2008! While it is true that I did win a couple of golds like that, most of my medals were by playing "honestly."

Kinda makes me want to come back and play again...
