May-07-13 J L Hammer vs Carlsen, 2013

|
Novirasputin: Magnus now has an Arabian Mate and Anastasia's Mate to his credit. I wonder how other GMs fair with mating patterns? Can Magnus run the cycle of each mating pattern there is? And is there a player who has done so?

| | Apr-18-13 Bronstein vs J Anagnostou, 1954
| |
|
Novirasputin: I'm wondering if this is another Bronstein Zugzwang? After Ke8 which looks forced white can get an exchange or maybe wait until black runs out of pawn moves to get more.

| | Apr-03-13 Mikhail Tal
| |
|
Novirasputin: Here is the difference. Tal was unquestionably the best in his prime (and at other times too). The thing is he never let his health act as a crutch even though it was a logical reason for some of his subpar performance. That is admirable and showed he just loved the game. The ...

|
Novirasputin: I would add that it wins because the subsequent threat after Bxd2 is Qf1 mate so Qñ2 does nothing

| |
|
Novirasputin: A 1400 might not have played this move but they would have played an earlier blunder. Furthermore even if a weak player plays the right move it doesn't mean it's for the right reasons. If this was the conspiracy why not resign? Why attempt the Reti trap At move 57?

| | Mar-25-13 O Bender vs D Benge, 1962
| |
|
Novirasputin: Bender was the fictional "hero" in the Ilf and Petroff classics 12 chairs and the Golden Calf ( in this case 1 million rubles). Bender a scam artist at one point pretends to be a GM and gives a simul in which he proceeds to lose every game. He runs out with an angry mob chasing

| | Mar-06-13 Fischer vs A Sandrin, 1964
| |
|
Novirasputin: It's a simul though is it mate in 3 5 min calc good? or 40 min sitting at a single board calculating 5 won endgame variations good? Simuls aren't always the place for best play. It's about efficient play which is what makes games like "Tal vs Sviridov" so inspiring

| | Feb-02-13 Terentiev vs J Gallagher, 1990
| |
|
Novirasputin: If 7.cxd Soltis writes
Nc6, e3, Nb4 and life is not fun for white anymore. Qb3 is the sin here the rest is just 1000 ways to die.

Novirasputin: Rubinstein trap claims another one

| | Jan-30-13 Rubinstein vs NN, 1903

|
Novirasputin: This same thing was in Nimzos book. Rook odds pawn on a3. I thought it was so because in typical Italian game c3, d4 variations black needs Bb4+ or the knights roll back and d6 comes. So with a3 black should avoid that variation. It seems even Euwe had a tourney win with such ...
