|Aug-02-12|| ||Jim Bartle: I don't know. Waiting five hours on a bus, which shouldn't have been possible, is definitely bad for preparation.|
|Aug-02-12|| ||Shams: Here's an unusual ejection:
|Aug-02-12|| ||Shams: All this time I've been playing badminton at a World Championship level, and I never knew it.|
|Aug-02-12|| ||WannaBe: <Shams> The stuff you learn at <Phony Benoni>'s forum. Remember, nowledge is powaa!!|
|Aug-02-12|| ||Shams: <WannaBe> That SI article you linked to was quite funny by the way.|
|Aug-03-12|| ||Phony Benoni: The new Bert Blyleven?
|Aug-03-12|| ||Jim Bartle: That was a sharp-breaking curve, and the behind-the-plate camera is not the best to appreciate it.|
Meanwhile, Calvin Johnson is on the cover of Madden NFL this year, so I guess you'll have to get along without him this year, PB.
|Aug-03-12|| ||WannaBe: Calvin Johnson will probably pull a hammy and tweek his shoulder while reaching for the remote, while watching the Olympics. =))|
|Aug-03-12|| ||Phony Benoni: John Madden was in town promoting the game yesterday. He pointed out that he's been on the cover for umpteen years in a row, and nothing ever happens to him.|
|Aug-04-12|| ||Jim Bartle: Both the Upton brothers hit their 100th home runs last night. Not a huge milestone, but I remember long ago when Jimmy Piersall hit his 100th and ran the bases backwards. Here's a photo: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HS1spWnkn... |
Notice how the next batter is waiting, and somehow not looking too amused.
|Aug-04-12|| ||Phony Benoni: <JB> Naturally, I had to find the game:|
The next hitter is Tim Harkness, who was probably expecting a bean ball at the first opportunity. The catcher is Clay Dalrymple, and Dallas Green is pitching.
This was Pearsall's only NL home run.
|Aug-04-12|| ||Jim Bartle: Checked a little on Piersall. He was once traded straight up for Gil Hodges! Of course Hodges was 39 at the time.|
|Aug-04-12|| ||Phony Benoni: When Jay Johnstone first came up with the Angels, Pearsall was his roommate.|
I don't want to go any further with that thought.
|Aug-04-12|| ||Jim Bartle: How strange. I think of Piersall and Johnstone as being from two totally different eras.|
|Aug-05-12|| ||WannaBe: Looking at tonight's Chi-LAD game's box score, lead-off hitter for LAD, S. Victorino, had 4 ABs, 1H, 1R, 0K, 0RBIand saw a total of 9 pitches.|
I've seen batters that saw more pitches than that in 1 at-bat! And he's a lead-off guy!! Oy vey.
|Aug-05-12|| ||Phony Benoni: Gosh, let the guy settle in. Maybe he had jet lag and wanted to get to bed early.|
|Aug-05-12|| ||Jim Bartle: But it's funny. In order to make room for Victorino the Dodgers cut Abreu, who must see more pitches per at-bat than just about any other player.|
Actually I think this wait and wait approach, and even "don't swing on 3 and 0," is not always that great. If you see a pitch early in the count (or on 3-0, for power hitters or with men in scoring position) you think you can hit, hit it.
|Aug-05-12|| ||Phony Benoni: <JB> Any thoughts on Andy Murray finally winning a big one?|
|Aug-05-12|| ||WannaBe: Watch out for those air-balls, and if you are sitting court side, watch out for those errant passes that is coming at you.|
|Aug-06-12|| ||waustad: Murray is kind of like Dementieva with that so far. Olympic gold but no slams.|
|Aug-06-12|| ||Jim Bartle: Great for Murray, winning gold the only time the Olympics will be held in his own country. That not all the attention of the public and press was concentrated at him, as at Wimbledon, may have helped.|
|Aug-06-12|| ||WannaBe: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opini...|
|Aug-06-12|| ||Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, I'm ready for some pre-season football action! How about you? I need some help from you on picking this seasons Bear-head that I wear to every Bear game at home and on the road in Cheeseville, Minnesota & Detroit. What do you think about these selections? I think I'm leaning toward C. because it will be easy access to toss back many brewski's on this great upcoming Chicago Bear Season!! ; P|
|Aug-06-12|| ||WannaBe: Anybody watching/catching this Canada-USA W. kick-ball match?|
|Aug-06-12|| ||Jim Bartle: Just read about the result. Must have been amazing.
But giving a free kick because the goalie held the ball too long? Lucky for the US.
