Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Detroit, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: OK, I'm probably missing something obvious again, but here goes: 34.Qxh7+ Kxh7 35.Rh1+ Bh6 36.Rxh6+ Kg7 37.Reh1, and though Black has some tricks with ...Bh5 or ...d5, they don't seem good enough to survive.

Phony Benoni: There's a silly question attached to this game. Here's the position after <22.Bf5+>: [DIAGRAM] Now after 22...Ke8 23.Bd7+, what was Black's final move, 23...Kd8 or 23...Kf8? Both moves allow 24.Bse7#, of course, but which one was it? Some decades ago, when I had a large ...

Phony Benoni: After <25...b5>: [DIAGRAM] The finish given, <26.Rxa6 Nc8 27.Qa3> does not make sense. Inverting White's moves with <26.Qa3 Nc8 27.Rxa6> would appear to be more probable..

saffuna: I wonder, if a team scored four or five in the first inning of a postseason game the way LA has, but in the top not the bottom, and they have a Kershaw-type going, is there ever any thought of going to a different pitcher immediately, and saving Kershaw for the next game?
Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: As seen this postseason, no lead is safe. Game might be a blowout, but it can get interesting. I thought NYY-CLE was over, but when I came back, nope. Although I hear Girardi is getting flamed for not using his challenge.
Premium Chessgames Member
Boomie: One thing we know from today is when a team scores a touchdown, they have a great chance to win.
Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: Kershaw with the base hit. 5th straight postseason he's had a base hit.

I don't want to jinx anything, but:

Kershaw postseason ERA in first 6 innings: 3.27

Kershaw postseason ERA in 7th inning: 21.32

Sure, 7-2 looks cozy, but no lead is safe in the postseason...

You had to open your big beak?

Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: And CHC blows a 3-1 lead. I was enjoying listening to that game. This series is the only series where the fans are actually quiet (so relaxing to listen to).

I do see Maddon is getting roasted with his pitching decisions. FTR, I agree with him to leave Edwards all the way up to Rendon, but would've brought in Wilson to face Murphy, and then Davis afterward. Oh well.

I did make one prediction right. I predicted Gio would pitch decently, but get a no decision. That pretty much sums up his first 5 postseason starts, surprisingly.

Definitely changes the series around. Scherzer on the mound tomorrow, and if he wins, sure Arrieta is feeling great, but do the Cubs bring back Hendricks on short rest?

Premium Chessgames Member
WannaBe: Man, all these managers are going nuts with their bullpen pitchers. R. Hill got the (quick) hook, K. Maeda who I think is well rested, got pulled for lefty/lefty matchup...

It's baseball, but not as we've known it.

Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: Speaking of quick hooks, look at John Farrell and BOS today. Sure, they're facing elimination, but, uh, nothing.

I kinda wanted to see HOU win today. Sometimes, it's nice to see a series where one team just absolutely dominates the other.

It's Thanksgiving tomorrow in Canada, and that also means baseball all day long! However, it could rain tomorrow in the BOS/NYY area, so that's not good. And one thing about the MLB postseason, unlike other playoffs, every day makes a difference. BOS could bring back Sale on 4 days rest (but HOU could bring Verlander too). Chapman threw 30+ pitches today. With the rest day, he's more likely to throw more than an inning now, again. Etc.

Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: Not many teams have come back from a 2-0 series deficit in a 5 game series, but 2 of those teams include BOS and NYY. Watch out HOU and CLE!
Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: Nice to see G5 like drama in a G4, with both managers bringing in their would've been G5 starters. Managing like there's no tomorrow.

I thought last year was pretty crazy when it came to bullpen usage (ex. Jansen making multiple 2+ inning appearances), but this year, the starters are coming in too!

Seems like the difference between "starter" and "relief" pitchers is becoming less notable. A couple of years ago, heading into a series, it would be about "which team has the better rotation". Now it seems, "which team has the better bullpen".

I predict in a 100 years or so, nearly every player on the roster will be able to hit, field, run and pitch (obviously to varying degrees).

Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: Was 0-0 in Chicago. Normally in a scoreless tie, it would be considered a "pitching and defense game". Well, pitching game for sure, but defense? How about, 5 errors in the game, including one that led to a run.
Premium Chessgames Member
Travis Bickle: Hey Mr Benoni, I'm still excited about that Cubs win today! I think those ex-Detroit players are making excellent contributions!

Phony this ice cold Bud truly is for you! ; P

P.S. Here I am making an appearance on The Jimmy Kimmel Show.

Stonehenge: Hello, there are some mistakes here:

Game Collection: Hastings 1935/36

The first round was played on the 27th and the last round on the 4th. (The 29th was a rest day, two rounds were played on the 30th).

And R P Michell vs Tylor, 1935 was a game from round four.

The info can be found here, and I checked it with a bunch of Dutch newspapers.

Premium Chessgames Member
WannaBe: <Stonehenge> No way, <PB> does not make mistakes. =))

<Penguincw> Regardless who wins between WAS/CHI, it will be a 're-match' with LAD, since LAD eliminated WAS last year and then got eliminated by CHI...

Hey, how about that genius D. Roberts putting K. Maeda out of bullpen!

Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: < Hey, how about that genius D. Roberts putting K. Maeda out of bullpen! >

I remember seeing some graphic in early August on the Dodgers' rotation, and it showed like <6> pitchers, all with an ERA under 4, and a winning record.

My thought when seeing it, how are the Dodgers going to be able to use all of them? Of course, the only way was to put some of them in the bullpen.

One idea is to go with a <6> man rotation. That is, every 3 games, you have 2 starters assigned to that game, and you ask each "starter" to go 3 innings each. From the 7th onward, you go to your regular bullpen.

Something tells me this could be very common in the regular season, in the future...

Premium Chessgames Member
WannaBe: No baseball today, two tomorrow.
Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: I see though many (except for TBS) wanted the game to be scheduled at 1 pm, but TBS refused (may or may not be a legit reason). Oh well.

But in baseball, every day makes a difference. Now WSH can go with Stratsburg and Gio on normal rest to save their season, instead of Roark. However, CHC can also go with Hendricks and Lester to close this series. And there's also the bullpen.

Though I'm sure that pitching is not the thing that is costing WSH...

Premium Chessgames Member
Boomie: Get out your mustard and rye bread, Grandma. It's grand salami time.
Premium Chessgames Member
WannaBe: Hmmmmmmm, salami on rye. Skip the mustard, but give me sauerkraut. =)
Premium Chessgames Member
WannaBe: Some guy, Joe Sewell only struck out 4 times in a season for Cleveland back in '25 and '29.

A. Judge have struck out 16 times thus far in the NYY and CLE series. Oy vey.

Premium Chessgames Member
WannaBe: Now that CLE have been eliminated, that got my interest regarding regular season longest winning streak and post season 'achievements'...

List of winning streak:

1. 26 Games (with a tie) NY Giants 1916. Finished fourth in National League, 7 games back of Brooklyn Robins

2. 22 Games CLE 2017, eliminated at Divisional Round

3(tie). 21 (also involved a tie game) Chicago White Stockings 1880. Best record in National League (hence, I guess, Champions)

3(t). 21 Games Chicago Cubs 1935. Lost to Detroit in World Series 4-2

5(t). 20 Games St. Louis Maroons & Providence Grays 1884. This is probably the most interesting of the streaks

Grays played in National League, Maroons played in Union Association (First and only season for this league)

In what was known as World's Championship Series, Grays beat New York Metropolitans 3-0

5(t). 20 Games Oakland Athletics 2002. Won AL West by 4 games over LAA, eliminated in Divisional Round by MIN.

8(tie). 19 Games Chicago White Sox 1906. Won world series

8(t). 19 Games NY Yankees 1947. Won World Series.

8(t). 19 Games Chicago White Stockings 1885. Second most interesting of the streaks, as White Stockings of NL took on St. Louis Browns of the American Association for the Championship.

The series ended 3-3-1 with Game 1 tied and called after 8 innings due to darkness, Game 2 was awarded to White Stockings because Browns disputed an umpire decision and refused to continue play after 6 innings.

Both teams claim to be THE Champion.

Premium Chessgames Member
saffuna: Cleveland has now lost SIX consecutive games where a win would have won the series. Three against Cubs last years, three against Yankees this year.

A team that won 22 straight during the season.
