Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Detroit, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

   Mar-18-18 Duras vs Fahrni, 1906
Phony Benoni: This game is not from the naming tournament at Ostend 1906; Fahrni vs Duras, 1906 is the game between these two players. There was a Rice Gambit tournament played at the site, in which Duras beat Fahrni twice. This is probably one of those games.

Phony Benoni: Agreed; there should be something, and probably just one inclusive page. Just wanted to say it wouldn't be trivially easy.

Phony Benoni: It doesn't look like Black had to give up the queen so drastically. But what was she going to able to do? So much for Gedeon's Strumpet.
   Mar-13-18 O Korneev vs Aronian, 1996 (replies)
Phony Benoni: Knowing a bit of endgame trivia helps here: two connected passed pawns on the sixth rank or beyonn normally defeat a rook. so 52.Rxh4+ Rxh4 53.Rxh4+ Kxh4 54.c6. Now, winning the resulting Q vs. R ending is not as easy as everybody thinks, but that's not my problem.

MissScarlett: Found/submitted the prelims victory by Eastman over Kashdan: Game Collection: US Open 1934, Chicago = 35th ACF Tournament in the Cincinnati Enquirer, 09.09.1934. Surprised Lahde missed it.
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <Miss Scarlett> Thanks. I'm rather embarrassed at missing the it myself. Thought I had gone through the Cincinnati Enquirer more thoroughly than that.

WannaBe: Should read The National Enquirer...
Premium Chessgames Member
MissScarlett: One slight problem - the game is the same as Denker vs G Eastman, 1934. I noticed yesterday that the opening was similar, but I just played through it waiting for the divergence that never came...What's the source for the score?
Premium Chessgames Member
OhioChessFan: <If a batter ball hits the foul pole, it is considered a home run even it it bounces back on the field or into foul territory.>

Because the foul pole is over/higher than the fence. The fence is the dividing line of the field. The equivalent to a field goal hitting a post and bouncing back would be a baseball hitting the top of the fence and bouncing back.

OhioChessFan: <But, even so, there is an inconsistency in football. If a kicked ball goes directly over the goal post, it's good. If it's a foot lower. hits the goal post and bounces back, it's no good. Why should the physical presence of the goal post be allowed to make a difference?>

I have never understood that one. Another thought. If a punted football is rolling with its ends facing the sidelines and a player stops it an inch before it reaches the goal line, what is the call? I used to know, but have forgotten. The problem is that when you reorient the ball to be snapped so the ends are facing the goalines, you either have to move the ball forward a few inches so that the center isn't snapping while it's on the goalline, or you must acknowledge the orientation of the rolling ball impacts where a touchback is warranted.

Phony Benoni: <Missscarlett> Unfortunately, my records don't indicate a source for that game. As I mentioned, I did go through Keeney's column in the <Cincinnati Enquirer>, and I'm left with the even more embarrassing possibility that I either misread or mistranscribed White's name.
Premium Chessgames Member
MissScarlett: But the dating of the game to the finals suggests the source was different.
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> I determinef the chronology before finding the game. When I thought it was Denker - Eastman, I gave it the data of that game. Kashdan - Eastman would have been played on July 22.

I'll send in a correction to change White's name Kashdan, and correct the section round / date information.

The thought just hit me, sheer speculation, but it seems to me to be consistent, is maybe the underlying thought is that to be good, a kick must pass inside the outer edge of the goalposts. If it hits the goalpost and bounces back, sure enough, it didn't pass inside the outer edge. If it goes directly over the goalpost, voila, it did pass inside the outer edge. The physical presence of the goalpost is a necessity for the determination of where the ball is travelling, but at least the premise is consistent..

MissScarlett: See you have some new Western championship games; what's the story behind the Brasket notebook?
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> I have no firsthand information. A collector in New York has access to game notebooks from players like Brasket, and shared the US Open games with me.

MissScarlett: Re. Game Collection: US Open 1905, Excelsior = 6th Western Champ., the <Minneapolis Journal> of August 26th, p.23, reported: <The committee decided yesterday to drop the Rosen games from the score, as he has played less than half his games. This will make the total number 16 instead of 17.>

It would also affect the top of the table because Blake drew his game with Rosen, whilst Schrader scored the full point (I don't know if this was a forfeit, though). Seen any other reference to the matter?

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: It appears they changed their minds at the last moment. The "Minneapolis Journal" for August 28, 1905, reported on page 4:

<"The executive committee decided in the evening business session that his [Blake's] draw with Rosen would have to stand, notwithstanding the withdrawal of Rosen for a time from the tournament. This cost Blake another half-point.">

This occurred just before the last round, and left Blake and Schrader tied for first at the time. In the final round Schrader defeated Fitzgerald while Bake could only draw against Stacy.

Thanks for bringing this up. I've added the information to the collection.
