Name: James Kulbacki . I prefer to go by "Jim".

Favorite player: You fill in the blank, chess players are my family! By the way, "Resignation Trap" is an anagram for Tigran Petrosian.

Before my first chess tournament, I came thoroughly prepared by reading Reuben Fine's "Basic Chess Endings" and a few other books by him which I could find in local book stores.

The result of my first tournament was a much-needed heavy dose of reality: four losses and one draw for a provisional rating of 992. I was disheartened, but I kept going to tournaments, as they provided me with a refuge away from the drudgeries of high school and my miserable family.

I also came to the conclusion that my World Championship title had to be postponed until 1981 at the earliest!

Conventional learning methods have rarely worked for me. Fate keeps pulling silly jokes on me: I studied works by Reuben Fine, and I ended up playing like Larry Fine. Larry Fine is the person on my avatar, for more information click here: http://www.stoogeworld.com/_Biograp... .

I specialize in collecting biographical and autobiographical books about chessplayers. I have at least one book on each of the following players: Michael Adams , Vladimir Alatortsev , Alexander Alekhine , Viswanathan Anand , Adolf Anderssen , Yuri Averbakh , Yuri Balashov , Sergey Vesevolodovich Belavenets , Alexander Beliavsky , Joel Benjamin , Pal Benko , Sidney Norman Bernstein , Arthur Bisguier , Joseph Henry Blackburne , Efim Bogoljubov , Isaac Boleslavsky , Viktor Bologan , Mikhail Botvinnik , David Bronstein , Jose Raul Capablanca , Magnus Carlsen , Rudolf Rezso Charousek , Maia Chiburdanidze , Mikhail Chigorin , Alexey Dreev , Fyodor Ivanovich Dus Chotimirsky , Billy Colias , Edgar Colle , Harlow Bussey Daly , Arnold Denker , Roman Dzindzichashvili , Max Euwe , Robert James Fischer , Salomon Flohr , Semyon Abramovich Furman , Nona Gaprindashvili , Boris Gelfand , Efim Geller , Aivars Gipslis , Svetozar Gligoric , Viktor Arsentievich Goglidze , Eduard Gufeld , Asa Hoffmann , Maria Ivanka-Budinsky , David Janowski , Xie Jun , Gata Kamsky , Anatoli Karpov , Garry Kasparov , Paul Keres , Alexander Khalifman , Ratmir Kholmov , Alexander Konstantinopolsky , Viktor Korchnoi , Alexander Kotov , Vladimir Kramnik , Viktor Kupreichik , Bent Larsen , Emanuel Lasker , Grigory Levenfish , Andre Lilienthal , Anatoly S Lutikov , Vladimir Andreevich Makogonov , Geza Maroczy , Frank James Marshall , Henrique Mecking , Vladas Ivanovich Mikenas , Anthony Miles , Paul Morphy , Miguel Najdorf , Rashid Gibiatovich Nezhmetdinov , Aron Nimzowitsch , John Nunn , Vasily Panov , Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian , Vladimir Petrov , Harry Nelson Pillsbury , Judit Polgar , Lev Polugaevsky , Lajos Portisch , Viacheslav Ragozin , Samuel Reshevsky , Richard Reti , Peter Arsenievich Romanovsky , Akiba Rubinstein , Anthony Santasiere , Carl Schlechter , Jennifer Shahade , Alexey Shirov , Nigel Short , Vladimir Simagin , Vasily Smyslov , Ivan Sokolov , Boris Spassky , Jonathan Speelman , Rudolf Spielmann , Howard Staunton , Leonid Stein , Wilhelm Steinitz , Alexey Suetin , Laszlo Szabo , Mark Taimanov , Mikhail Tal , Siegbert Tarrasch , Savielly Tartakower , Richard Teichmann , Jan Timman , Alexander Kazimirovich Tolush , Olaf Ulvestad , Milan Vidmar , Daniel Yanofsky , Frederick D Yates , Alexander Zaitsev , and Elmars Zemgalis .

If you have questions about these players (or others, for that matter) just ask! If you wish to contribute a book to my collection, please do!

As for the surname <Kulbacki>, for many years, I thought that it originated from the Polish word "kulbac" = "saddle" in English. However, a few years ago, out of curiosity, I found a website with my name on it, and I put it through an online Polish-to-English translation service. Its translation of "Kulbacki" (and I am a little embarrassed to admit this): "Halibut" !! See: http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kulbak... . For many years, I had always called weaker chessplayers "fish", but now I use "patzers".

Away from chess, I provide vehicle transportation for railroad employees, driving for Express Shuttle, Inc., along the I-25 corridor, from Casper, Wyoming to Denver, Colorado. If you click on one of these webcamera sites, there is a slight chance that you will see my black 2005 Suburban moving along: http://www.wyoroad.info/highway/web... in Casper. Or http://www.wyoroad.info/highway/web... in Bordeaux (a very windy place where many trucks get overturned).

For the weather in Cheyenne, just click here: http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin... .

On March 17, 2007, I was a participant in the Wyoming Championship....of Burrito Eating! This was no ordinary burrito, it was a "Gutbuster" which weighs three pounds (1.36 kg). I finished fourth overall (no prize). In the following video, you can see me in the upper right of the screen (male-pattern baldness, white shirt), trying to scarf down this monstrous meal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCeJ... . There was no entry fee, and the burrito was free as well!

Resignation Trap: Kramnik's tough to beat even when he has an "off" tournament. I predict a draw unless Aronian overpresses his chances. Vladimir Borisovich is simply playing too well in the Tal Memorial.

Resignation Trap: It seems to me that neither Andre Lilienthal nor Rudolf Spielmann were the players mentioned by name in this bit of free verse. Spielmann was 37 (not 80), while Lilienthal was nine! Oddly enough, they share May 5 as a birthday (in 1883 and 1911, respectively)!

Resignation Trap: Alekseev remembers: "Passed Pawns must be pushed." However, 36. h4? and 38.g7? lead to disaster as Black just snips off these protected pawns. Probsbly time pressure blunders.

WannaBe: <hangingenprise> dropped in (the pub) yesterday, and we played a skittles game.

He said he drove down to visit family and is leaving Long Beach today, going back to Wyoming. Also mentioned about possibly going to the 2009 National Open in Las Vegas, also said he might drag you along.

Hope you are healed from your surgery, we talked about you, <tpstar>, <Phony Benoni> etc...

Will post the PGN from our skittles game later.

suenteus po 147: The interesting thing about those zany laws is that there is always a cool story behind them. For example, the hilarious ones that <NakoSonorense> listed for California must come from the fact so many Hollywood movies have been shot in California. So an automated stunt car (without a driver, of course) cannot exceed a certain speed for safety reasons. Likewise the regulation of sheep down the boulevard. Practically every movie in the '40s had more than two thousand sheep herded down a street, much to the chagrin of the local citizens. I'm guessing the Idaho giraffe law has something to do with Hemingway.

Karpova: I don't know where to post this but I came across two strange players (without finding a game they played) in Gaige's "Chess Personalia":

Isidor Hochberg
Born: 1911.04.30 in New York, NY
Died: 1940.05.08 in New York

Morris Hochberg
Born: 1913.11.09 in New York, NY
Died: 1940.02.15 in New York, NY

That's not a coincidence, is it? Same Surname, only 2 years between their birth, same birthplace, both died in 1940...

Speculation: Brothers, death sentence?

Karpova: I hope you don't mind me posting those things here, <Resignation Trap>. Also interesting is the Tromp family - all come from Woudsend, the Netherlands (I didn't find a game score).

J C E Tromp (* 1840.02.25)
J H Tromp (* 1830.01.06)
S S Tromp (* 1826.12.22)
T H Tromp (* 1849.04.11)
T S Tromp (* 1833.09.15, + 1853.07.09)

T S died shortly before his 20th birthday.

Do you have any further information on

suenteus po 147: <Resignation Trap> I'm finally freeing up some collection building time for Moscow tournaments! I was wondering if you were still interested in helping me construct the Mikhail Chigorin Memorial held in Moscow in 1947? Also, I could use information (crosstables, historical info, etc.) on Moscow 1959 and Moscow 1966. Plus, if there's round information in addition to historical context on Moscow 1964, Moscow 1975, and Moscow 1985 that would fantastic as well. Hope all is well with you!
Mar-26-09   alshatranji: Hi Jim

I'm wondering if you could help research a piece of chess lore. From what I can tell, you seem to be an expert on the subject. This is a story you cited in your comment on a game between Tolush and Kotov Tolush vs Kotov, 1945 When Kotov offered Tolush part of the prize money "to take a dive", Tolush replied "glory for you, money for me". Kotov refused, and Tolush beat him in the final round, etc. Now I know I read about this years ago (when I was in the US). It was in a book that contained many anecdotes on chess and chess players, among other thing. But I can't remember the title. Would you by any means know this book (assuming it is your source). I would be very grateful if you could remember the title, as I really need it. Thank you in advance.

Apr-12-09   alshatranji: I just saw that you mentioned that book on the same page. I didn't bother to read the whole discussion. Sorry about that.

Phony Benoni: Good to have you back, Jim!

Thanks for the links. I thought I was just about finished with this project, but it looks like there's a whole lot left to check out.

I'll be especially interested to see if I've reconstructed the round-by-round pairings correctly. I've been able to account for most of the available information so far, but it can't hurt to double check things.

  SirChrislov: Hey James, name's Chris.
you were chewing too slow on that burrito man. the way to do it is bite, chew, drink, like the guy in the green shirt. congrats on your 4th place thou.

I used to beat my cousins in chili pepper eating and hot sauce drinking competitions. good ol times.

Phony Benoni: Yes, that 1933 Tournament oc Champions lools interesting. Unfortunately, Voronsky only had four complete games out of 12, and there are none in our database here.

I'll have to look around a little; it would be a good one to add as a footnote to the USSR tournament index (Game Collection: USSR Championship Tournament Index).
