Shams: <hedgeh0g> I suspect you are a stronger player than I but I shall offer some thoughts anyway. Interesting opening. After 5.g3 I personally would be reticent to play 5...d5 and part with my DSB, but probably this is me being hidebound and not appreciating Black's own resources. ...

If this won't improve my Knight play, nothing will. Also I'm showing my knights youtube clips of Vishy's "sweep everything in their path away" knights, for inspiration.

<Moscow Rules? Are you a spy?>

I'm the illegitimate grandson of Sidney Riley. Please don't tell anyone as I use this site extensively for tradecraft.

Jan-12-12  optimal play: Thank you for your welcome <Shams> I appreciate that. I've actually been a visitor to this site for quite a while, but it was only last Oct I decided to become a member. I might even become a premium member a bit later.

Shams: <Colonel> I could never be a spy, for a million reasons, but I'm fascinated by the trade. I have always enjoyed imagining it to be the most difficult job in the world.

Shams of Tabriz was a Persian mystic. I like the stories I have read of him, but mostly I just like his name a lot, how it sounds. In Arabic, the word means sunlight-- one of the many things I've learned on this forum.

Did you ever listen to the David Cross anti-religion comedy routines I posted in your forum?

Feb-03-12  Colonel Mortimer: I never got round to it. I'll have a listen.

I did! Not apt for many folks who are regular contributors to this website, but I found most of what I looked at funny.

To me the worst thing about religious belief is its, by definition, unquestionability. But there are good sides too. The best quality of religious belief, to me, is the belief in something bigger than yourself (this can lead to many outcomes, many of them ugly, but in principle it should promote modesty).

Of all stand-up comedians I think my favorite is Louis C.K. Are you familiar with him? He also has a TV show (Louie), available on Hulu, I think.

What type of law are you planning to practice--an office of your own, or are you going to try and hook up with a big firm, or perhaps a corporation?

Check It Out: We should do some 60 minute a side games sometime. Then we could build a stack of better quality games to look at.
Mar-06-12  frogbert: even medium-quality games can lead to lots of interesting analysis! exhibit a) - my own games of questionable quality. exhibit b) - the analysis of said games.

do you get together in seattle sometimes to analyze games?

Mar-28-12  MirandaB: Hi Shams. I rethought my proposed move and decided to go Ne5 instead. My friend has already mused that we might trade queens, and I figured if I went through with Bg5 she might not see any downside to taking my queen with hers and calling it even. This way I block her queen with my knight, and will consider Bg5 for my next move depending upon how she responds. I look forward to seeing her response. I am having to shift from my tendency to play positionally in favor of tactical play since my friend seems to emphasize aggressive tactical play herself. It is really great to get back into chess after not playing for such a long time. My own obstacle previously (pre-internet) was in not having a ready opponent. I also wanted to play correspondence chess before but snail mail was so interminably slow.

jessicafischerqueen: <Shams>- re: Soviet Masters who got their titles through an Examination Match-

I'll post this here since it's not really on topic on <Nezh's> game page.

<Ragozin> earned his Master title in a Match against examiner <Ilyin-Genevsky> in 1929: http://www.chessmetrics.com/cm/CM2/...

Interestingly, <Ragozin> also got his Grandmaster title in an Examination Match, this time against <Bondarevsky>: http://www.chessmetrics.com/cm/CM2/...

I just ran across this information today whilst reading some reminiscences by <Mikhail Botnivinnik> in

"Botvinnik's Complete Games (1924-1941)
